Think Yourself Healthy by Appreciating the Exercise You Already Do How strong do you think the link is between mind and body?
For example, is it possible to think yourself fitter without doing any additional exercise, but by simply better appreciating how much exercise you already do? A recent experiment by Alia Crum and Professor Ellen Langer of Harvard University suggests the incredible answer is yes.
Dr Ben Goldacre at Bad Science (although this is good science!) describes the study which was carried out on hotel attendants who were informed how much exercise they were already doing as a regular part of their job. Here's Ben's conclusion:
"...amazingly, despite no change in actual exercise levels, in the intervention group, simply being told about the value of what they were already doing caused a significant change for the better on every single one of the objective health measures recorded: weight, body fat, body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio and blood pressure."
To illustrate with just one of the outcomes they measured, the average weight of those in the intervention group reduced from 145.5 lbs to 143.72 lbs. Over the same period the control group showed no significant change. For those of you working metric-style that's 66.14 kg down to 65.33 kg.
That's like dropping a bag of sugar. In four weeks. With no additional exercise.
Now that's the power of the mind-body link right there, measured in pounds and ounces.
Good for you! I need to get doing something. Probably should start with moving my Bowflex out of my garage and into someplace where I might actually use it.

I can relate. I think out Total Gym is in the back of the spare closet. We do have a fitness center in the apt complex though. They just peeved us off and we haven't had motivation to go back up there. I was thinking of buying a workout video

I'm still exercising for a half hour every morning. I've gained a pound. But my husband says he notices a difference. I think he's just trying to make me feel good.
Really I just want to be able to go back to my doctor later and say I did it. I'd love to drop a few pounds while I'm at it though too. Well, screw the pounds, I was technically overweight when I was at my fittest. I'd love to drop a few pants sizes.
I have a really nice weight machine in my basement already... Pambo and Richard gave it to me a while ago because they didn't use it. I walk right by it on my way to the washer and dryer. Every time I think about using it, my elbow starts hurting.

Mz, usually weight gain happens when you increase the exercising. Muscle always weighs more than fat, so you're probably building additional muscle while trimming away some fat. It's not a bad thing for your weight to actually increase....you should begin to notice a difference in the way your clothes fit very soon.
I need to do something desperately. A lot of my back problems stem from the fact that I am now overweight. My problem is that with a bad back, it hurts to excecise. I am going to commit to starting out slow and building tolerance.
I like it more than bust your a** on a recumbent bike and still be disappointed by the results. That's my usual plan.
I never could get into the bicycle to nowhere. My cardio of choice is the elyptical machine. Back in the day when I was all hard core on the workouts, I used to do at least an hour on there before hitting the weights. I really should get back to that.

I'm trying to convince me to part with the benjamins to buy one, though I have no clue where I would put it. I'd probably want it in my bedroom but there really isn't room in there unless I remove my rocking chair.

I think if we all lived near one another, we would be excellent workout partners for one another. We would have a blast.
Even if you have the equipment at home, the point it is using it. Trust me. Even though may be working out on a regular basis, it is so easy to start skipping days and slacking off. *Guilty.

Yeah I'm guilty of slackin' off too Fuzzy. I have a weight machine and a stationary bike downstairs. I start using them and really get into a good work out routine, then pretty soon I start skipping a day here or there....next thing I know, I'm slacking big time.
It would be fun if we all lived close enough that we could exercise together, with the station playing in the background of course.
Yeah! A blackout period! It's sad, but when I'm on the bike I'm always looking over at the laptop thinking "gee, I wonder if anyone said anything funny, I should take a break and check!"
Then I get off the bike, get into a conversation on here and never return.
Yeah, I know I'll be building up some muscle and that it weighs more than fat, but I've been doing this for almost 5 weeks now, I expected I'd drop a pound by now. I'm not impatient for it, I just want to be sure I'm doing enough.
I like the workout on an elliptical machine better, but I can read easier on the bike. Reading is what keeps me doing it every day. If I couldn't read or do something else at the same time, I'd end up giving it up. I'm still not sure how I'm going to stay motivated to get up and clean the snow off the car and then go work out once winter comes around.
We would be gabbing so much during our workout that we wouldn't realize that we would all be doing so well. Then we could come back to the forum and say things like, "Did you see what JR was wearing? He must have had his medium sized underwear on today under those spandex."
I still the best things to get me started would be to get into a pool. That would help take the pressure off the body. Way back when, I used to go to the YMCA, do my lifting and cardio and then hit the pool for just a few laps. I used it like my cool down period. Of course, that is when I had full access to the Y for $100 a year. I think it is about $600. I dunno.

It's somewhere in that price range. Pambo's family has a membership at ours. She keeps trying to talk me into signing up there so we could do water aerobics together. I think she is insane... that would lead to only one thing: getting kicked out for playing Marco Polo.

For just one person, for our Y, it's about $350 per year. But I take enough classes there that it comes out cheaper to buy the membership than to pay the non-member price.
