Safe haven laws

Wow this story just shocks me... I see both sides and it is very, very sad!Two more children have been left at hospitals since a father dropped off his nine children at Creighton University Medical Center Wednesday night. The state's Department of Health and Human Services confirmed that an 8-year-old boy was taken to Immanuel Hospital at 5 p.m. and an 11-year-old boy was taken to the same hospital at 8:30 p.m.One of the boys was placed in foster care and the other is still at the hospital undergoing evaluation. This brings the total number of children left at Omaha hospitals during the past 24 hours to 11.See a report of all Nebraska's Safe Haven CasesThe man who left all nine of his children, ages 1 through 17, at the hospital Wednesday night will not be charged because of the Safe Haven law, which states any child under the age of 19 can be left at a hospital if they're in immediate danger. The two additional cases are the fifth and sixth tests of the state's Safe Haven. Before Wednesday, children ages 11, 13, and 15 were dropped off at hospitals since the law was implemented in July.Nebraska lawmakers said they may need to clarify the law, which was intended to protect newborn children, if a parent is overwhelmed. Department of Health and Human Services ReactsNebraska's Safe Haven law was not intended for those having difficulty parenting defiant and unruly youths, according to the state's Department of Health and Human Services. Thus, they may still be charged."There seems to be a misconception that when a child is dropped off at a hospital, the parents are absolved of responsibility. That couldn't be further from the truth," said Toddy Landry, director of the Division of Children and Family Services in Department of Health and Human Services.Landry said in a press release Thursday that the courts will get involved in the lives of families who drop off children. He said courts are likely to require parents and guardians to participate in parenting classes, family therapy, conflict resolution or other services and may order child support payments while they are in state custody."I am very concerned about the situations we've seen so far. I empathize with parents who aren't sure where to turn, but I want to encourage those families to use other options before taking the drastic step of abandoning a child," Landry said in the release.Other options include community support groups, crisis hot lines, treatment centers or other services. Faith-based community services can also be a source of support, Landry said.As a last resort, law enforcement can be contacted."It's important to recognize the potential trauma abandonment can cause for children of all ages," Landry said. "For the benefit of the child, it's important that LB 157 only be used when the child is in immediate danger of being harmed."

Hm, that is a hard one. On one hand, I think that if a parent doesn't want their child, the child would likely be better off in a loving foster home instead.

No matter how you look at it, it's better that the parent drops them off & goes away than it is to find their kids beat up, starved or dead.

I'm glad there are such laws to protect kids from harm. I think it is a real shame that some folks are probably abusing the laws just to ditch kids that they probably did a horrible job of parenting. I don't know of a parent out there who hasn't had at least a moment where they fantasize about dumping their kid off someplace because they are being bad. Daydreaming about it is one thing, actually doing it is another.

I agree. I just go back to thinking of Precious Doe & the starved triples from this area. I wish we would have had a place where their horrible parents could have dropped them off.

I know I thought about dropping my boys off in another state several times.

Apparently when we were little and Momma would get frustrated with us, she used to threaten to either throw us up in a tree or in a ditch. I guess I was the only one who had the guts to speak up on that matter. Hence the family legendary MMism: You're not gonna throw me in a ditch in a tree!!!"

My threat was always:

"Fine. I'm takin' you to grandmas then."

My mom's kinda mental so the kids would ALWAYS straighten up.

I don't blame them. I don't wanna hang out with her myself.

By the way, Grandson #1 calls her Grandma Crazy...to her face. The first time he did it, I thought she'd flip out, but she has embraced it. WHEW!

There's not much you can say to a 3 yr old, especially when you know you are crazy.
