Pay with Cash at Indian-run Establishments?

Last night we went to an Indian run grocery store. They give you 5% off your purchase if you pay in cash. There was a sign in the window saying so.

After the grocery store we went to the Indian Restaurant accross the lot. Its not stated anywhere, but because I had cash last evening, they knocked 10% off the bill! A $53 bill became $47.70. Pay with cash, you might get a nice discount in some places.

A lot of gas stations are starting to give discounts for cash too.

Guess that is one up side to everybody worrying about the credit crunch.

Credit and debit cards cut into the merchant's profit. Typically there is a per transaction processing fee plus a percentage which is often around 2% that the credit card processing company keeps out of your money before they give it to you.

Its illegal to add a surcharge when someone pays with a credit or debit card, but it is legal to give a discount for cash. That could be what they are doing.

Whatever their motive, I have no objections! biggrin How nice to spend just a little less on groceries and dining!

I pay with cash all the time, but I'm not getting any discounts anywhere. hmm  I wonder if it's because MI's economy is doing a bit worse than throughout the rest of the country so they can't afford to give any discounts.  confused
