How does this happen in music?

Does he have no say??? That is stupid.

Tim McGraw apologized to fans Tuesday for his latest greatest hits album, saying his label should have instead released a record with new music.

"I am saddened and disappointed that my label chose to put out another hits album instead of new music," says the country singer. "I've only had one studio album since my last hits package. It has to be just as confusing to the fans as it is to me."

McGraw, 41, said he has been working on a new studio album for more than a year and has debuted three new songs on his tour. But he said his label, Curb Records, decided to release a greatest hits album instead, to extend his contract term.

"I had no involvement in the creation or presentation of this record," he says. "Sure, I love the songs and I don't want to take anything away from all the creative people who were a part of making those records. But the whole concept is an embarrassment to me as an artist. In the spirit of an election year, I would simply say to my fans 'I'm Tim McGraw, and I don't approve their message.' "

According to a Curb Records statement, Executive Vice President and General Manager Dennis Hannon had "numerous conversations" with McGraw's representatives about "all aspects" of Greatest Hits 3.

"The good news is that the album is anticipated to debut as the No. 1 album on the Billboard Country chart," the label says. "Nevertheless, we share Tim McGraw's disappointment with the first week's sales levels and we acknowledge that unfortunately the week that this album was released was right at the peak of the collapse of the economic and finance markets."

Curb Records adds: "We are going to work hard to try to take the current single 'Let It Go' to No. 1 in hopes that the economic climate is improving and that sales will also improve."

It's not unusual anymore for labels to do this, and with Christmas coming I'm sure they just wanted something that will sell as a gift for the holidays.

It is frustrating though.

Even more frustrating are the artists that are no longer popular. I'd bet 9 of Chicago's last 10 releases have been greatest hits sets.

Or what about those artists that only had ONE actual billboard Hot 100 hit but still get a greatest hits CD.

I remember going to the exclusive company a few years ago and seeing that the Georgia Satellites had a GH album.

They had one actual hit in their entire career. Their debut CD with that song on it was technically already their greatest hit(s). no.gif

I just think the artist should have a say. I guess in a way he got his say...but it might have been better to tell them do not release it and not have to go public with his anger.

This is why more and more artists are moving away from dealing with labels.

The artist should absolutely have some right to determine what is put out there in his or her name. But the labels are only worried about milking every last dollar out of the contract.

With all his money (their money) think he would leave and start his own!

Well, he said he has one more record on his contract, maybe after that he will.

Right now the major labels distribute all the music for themselves and the smaller labels. But I have a feeling soon someone will come along and start a distribution network that's independent of the labels.

Someone who would simply charge a flat rate to take in truckloads of CD's and then ship them to all the nations retailers. Once someone does that the artists would find it much easier to go it alone without the labels, particularly the well established ones.

Right now there are middle men like AENT, but they rely on the labels for everything, they're not truly independent.
