NEW YORK - A Wal-Mart worker has died after being trampled by a throng of unruly shoppers shortly after the Long Island store opened Friday, police said. Unconfirmed reports said a pregnant woman also miscarried as the crowd rushed in.

Nassau County police said the 34-year-old Wal-Mart worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at about 6 a.m. ET, an hour after the store opened.

A police statement said a throng of shoppers "physically broke down the doors, knocking him to the ground." The exact cause of death "will be determined by the medical examiner's office," the police stated.

A coworker said the clerk was "bum-rushed by 200 people," according to the New York Daily News. "They took the doors off the hinges," said Jimmy Overby. "He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too ... I literally had to fight people off my back."

Police added that "a 28-year-old pregnant female was also transported to an area hospital for observation."

Shopper Jessica Keyes told the Daily News that she saw the woman being knocked down near where the worker lay dying.

According to Keys, when paramedics arrived they told the woman that "there's nothing we can do. The baby is gone."

Other shoppers said people kept entering the story as emergency crews attended the woman and store clerk.

"They were working on him, but you could see he was dead," the Daily News quoted shopper Halcyon Alexander as saying. "People were still coming through."

"They're savages," shopper Kimberly Cribbs said of the crowd. "It's sad. It's terrible."

Police added that three other shoppers " suffered minor injuries and were transported to area hospitals."

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., in Bentonville, Ark., would not confirm the reports of a stampede during the day-after-Thanksgiving bargain hunting, but said a "medical emergency" caused them to close the store.

A story on CNN.com says doctors at a hospital determined the woman's baby was ok.

A co-worker's husband here is a policeman, and she was relaying stories of his from this am. Niothing like this of course, but still remarkable stories about stupid people doing whatever they have to to get that black friday deal. no.gif

Oh man, that's GREAT news. It's sad to see the guy die of course, but the woman losing her child over something so stupid was REALLY heartbreaking.

And people wonder why I won't go out shopping on Black Friday. I mean, who would think you'd have to fear for your life going to work at WalMart?

I wonder if they are going to charge anyone over this.

Clearly it isnt murder, because the intent wasnt there.
But they could charge these people with manslaughter.

They'd have to know who to charge first.  "Pardon me, were you part of the crowd that killed the WalMart employee?"

They have surveillance cameras.  They have ways to piece this together.

It still seems like an impossible task. Unless there was one or two people who definitely started it, how would they determine who to charge?

Nothing is impossible if the cameras were working. People are creatures of habit. They tend to shop in the same places. Somebody will recognize someone from the tape and it goes from there.

It will take resources to investigate this case...but believe me Mz...there are ways to piece this together.

Even if they dont ever return to the store to shop...

You put together photos from the surveillance tape...

and then you canvass...knock on doors...

But it takes manpower...

If I was related to this employee...I would keep the heat on the police to do just that.  And I would pu t heat on the sotore to put heat on th e P.D.

But yes...there are ways to get this done.

And hardly anyone uses cash anymore, so they will have access to a fairly comprehensive list of who was at the store in the morning off of credit card and check transactions.

It would be hard to shop after doing or witnessing that...but you are right Mema...They probably did just that.

Sad fact is that the people involved probably didn't take the time to notice what was going on.

Its hard to understand, but you are right...people can be oblivious.

Those mob situations can be scary...even if you are at the front...you are being pushed from behind and you cant stop or you will be trampled.

Just like at that Who Concert in Ohio in the 70's.

Who do you blame though?

I mean, I suspect that the people did not purposely trample the person on the ground, but when you have 500 other people pushing on your back, there is not much you can do but go forward and try to stay on your own feet.

Even if they get some people that actually trampled the guy, can you blame them when they were being pushed and can't see where they are going?

I am sure not one of those people wanted to trample anyone for a sale.

And you are right, you are trying not to be trampled yourself.

But intent is not the issue here.

I would need to see how the statute reads for NY state law.
There are certain criteria that must be present.

Clearly, the biggest criteria present is Great Bodily harm.

Work backwards from that.

I'm sure Walmart will be sued as well. I've already heard members of the crowd saying there wasn't enough security and crowd control.

It's Wal-Marts fault people can't be trusted to not act like animals you know!

I'd bet you are correct. Wal-Mart will be sued. They will likely lose. Unfortunately, nothing will change. Stores will still run these ridiculous door buster sales and people will still go to them and act like idiots.
