Does it bother you?

Quick question for you.

There are a few songs that I personally REALLY like, but haven't put them on the playlist because they drop the f-bomb in them (why, I have NO idea).

I'm not talking about hard-core rap here, just rock songs that for whatever reason the artist felt it necesarry to drop one or maybe two f-bombs in.

Songs like the Pretenders COMPLEX PERSON, Tesla's version of SIGNS and Robbie Williams COME UNDONE.

Would you be opposed to these songs being on the playlist?

I assume that most of you listen at work with headphones, so it shouldn't be too big of an issue, but if anyone listens at work on an open speaker, or maybe at home with their kids, then perhaps this isn't a good idea.

I could always cool-edit the offensive word out of the song, but I hate to do that because it's always obvious it's been done.

What are your views?

I would prefer that these songs weren't played because my 11 year old son does listen to this when I have it on at home.  However, I won't stop listening if they are played.

You can bury the "song" by William Shatner that you just played.

LOL,

You'll be happy to know that Shatner song HAS been nixed from the playlist effective today.

I cut it short as it was, but decided to totally remove it while I was listening to it play.  Any NORMAL song I wouldn't do that, because SOMEONE may like it (since it was requested SOMEONE does).

But that wasn't really a song, it was just a novelty.  Maybe I'll rotate stuff like that on and off the list.

At any rate, you won't hear it for a long time now!

I personally love the song "Signs" and especially the one with the "F" bomb in it. I do listen at work but generally I have my office door closed so it won't be an issue for me.

Thanks so much for killing that Shatner song (if you can call it that)! If you'd have left it some ninny would have requested one of Leonard Nimoy's songs too! It amazes me whenever actors think they can be singers! Or visa versa!!

Liz Phair drops the F-Bomb in "Why Can't I?", but I can't feasibly see that coming off the request list for awhile yet, its such a popular song. But you really have to listen for it to hear it.

Last night, I started off College Daze Revisited with a couple of profanity laced songs by MC5. I had forgotten about that, and even at 10:30 at night I found myself cringing. I didn't lose any listeners, so I guess they've come to expect anything on Sunday nights, but I am SURE it would totally offend the majority of daytime listeners. Heck it offended me and I'm the dj!

I would like to echo StevieB's sentiments on this subject.  I would prefer such songs NOT be played.  My wife listens to the station during the day while caring for our 1 year-old twins, and while they may not be able to pick up the word now, it won;t be too long before they will!  It's nearly impossible to keep kids from hearing some of the less-offensive swear words like Da** anymore, but this particular word still seems to be taboo on TV and radio for the most part, so it'd be nice to keep it that way on freeze-frame radio as well.

However, as StevieB said, I also will not stop listening if such songs are included.  Cool-editing the word out so that you can play these songs without offending anyone would be fine with me as a workaround though.

Two funny anecdotes if you will on this subject though...

I really love the song Unbelievable by EMF, so I guess I'll have to tell my kids they're saying "Funk" in that song!

When I was a kid, I bought the 45 of "Games People Play" by the Alan Parsons Project, not realizing they say the Da** word in it.  When I got it home and played it on my now-vintage turntable my dad handed down to me, I heard the word and got all upset and scared and told my parents about it, insisting I didn;t know the word was in it and worrying they were going to ground me or something.  How things have changed since then, eh?  Turns out they were ok with it though, so I got to keep the record.

Wow, I've never caught the swearing in the EMF song OR the Liz Phair song!

Those have always been in the playlist.

Well.  My take on the whole swearing thing is, I think it's pointless and wrong.  It's the MAIN reason I don't like rap music.  I think that when you swear in front of other people you make it known that you're ok with it, then they're more likely to swear, and so on and so on.

Until eventually you get to where we are today, which is having people that no longer feel it's necessary to curb their tongue wherever they are.

As for the three songs I mentioned, if I can cool-edit them without butchering them too badly I'll do so.  Otherwise they'll stay out of the rotation.

Thanks for your input guys!

I dont mind any songs with the f word in but I dont listen with kids or anything so I guess its not up to me really, If people listen with thier kids then they should decide, if they are against it or not.

PS Jeremy, you should probably check out Longview by Greenday, its got a couple of choice words in there.

Ohh and the Robbie song you mentioned is great, I hope that gets in the playlist.

I don't mind it in a song.  I don't think it's great, but my kids have heard it and they understand that that is an "adult" word and although they hear it, they are not allowed to say it.  Not to imply that that my way is best (especially with little magpies that will repeat everything and are too young to understand).  I absolutely love the American Hi-Fi song "Art of Losing" and it drops it in the chorus.  I just downloaded it from walmart.com and hey! lookie there, they did the editing for me.

Hey SKYEBUG

I just realized that was your FIRST POST!

That's GOT to be a record for longest time between signing up and making the first post.

Too bad our resident statistician isn't around for verification purposes.

Hey...Lurking here...remember.....

Yes... That At this point would be the longest time between Sign-up & first post. There were 7 members who signed up before Skyebug, (Riggs, JD, Mo, Meenie Greenie, Jeff Roberts, Trish, & Asisson1969) And with the exception of Meenie & Jeff, we are fairly regular posters. Meenie gave us a post right away, & Jeff Posted within 4 days.....Skyebug.....4 months & 6 Days for the first post....

Now if you want to go longest time w/o posting....Meenie was # 4 to sign up (on day 2 of the boards existance), made the first post minutes later, and hasn't been heard from since....4 Months & 14 days between posts & counting.....

THAT ANGERS ME BECAUSE BOTH RIGGS AND I KNOW "MEENIE" PERSONALLY. (She actually works where I work)- I know she is a BUSY PERSON! BUT NO ONE SHOULD BE SO BUSY TO NOT AT LEAST STOP IN AND SAY HI ONCE IN AWHILE ONCE THEY ARE REGISTERED!

Okay okay! I'll take it! Granted it's cool to be the winner of something! Though that's a rather dubious award!

I do listen every work day but until recently I've been swamped! Like barely able to spare the time to go to the bathroom!!

I love the station and I play bingo so I'll try to post more regularily!

Back to Shatner thing though....who in the world would actually request that silly "song". I thought it was some weird Kansas song I never heard of only to open my player to see James T. Kirk!!! That's just not logical!

Hey Riggs, Do you have a way of tracking who is logged in and listening the longest every day? Or has the most hours logged?

Sparky, I have no tracking ability for tuning into the station, the best I can do is the next day I can see what areas of the country were logged in and for how long.

I CAN follow someone pretty closely through our web site, so for example, if someone logs on I can tell almost everyplace they stopped, what pages they viewed, how long they were there, etc.

MO, nice job pulling the stats up for us!
