I consider myself to be more of a spiritual person than one that participates in organized religion. It doesn't mean I don't believe in God; I actually do, but I prefer to worship and commune with Him outside of a church and in my own way. I think it's because I've been in many different churches, have been a member of several, and have never really felt welcomed in any of them. I just feel more in tune with Him when I'm outside, in nature.
I'm much the same way, Ghost. I've no doubt there is a God. I've no doubt my life has been directly moved (and even spared) by the hand of God. I'm just not big on organized religion.

I do have to say, meeting with people in a similar mindset does help you come along with you belief. (this is deep so, if you aren't ready for something deep, check out and come back later) FFR is a place of similarity. Understood that you all have different backgrounds/beliefs but, a common cause of being united and sharing with each other. Welcome to the church of FFR! When we come together in masses, we are truely powerful. Dig.
"The religion of the future will be a cosmic religion. It should transcend personal God and avoid dogma and theology. Covering both the natural and the spiritual, it should be based on a religious sense arising from the experience of all things natural and spiritual as a meaningful unity. Buddhism answers this description. ..... If there is any religion that could cope with modern scientific needs it would be Buddhism."

Well said, Squonk. I'm not an organized religion person either. I don't begrudge those who are, but I've never felt truly welcomed in a church congregation either. I thought I'd found one a few years back, but about time they told me that it is 'not appropriate or acceptable' for men and women to be friends, I had to walk away. One of my dearest friends in life is a man... no one can tell me that God didn't put us in each other's lives and mean for us to befriend each other and be there through thick and thin. He did that, and it wasn't a mistake, and it isn't wrong.
Aside from that, far as I have read in the Bible, God has little use for cash. He doesn't have a bank account. I sure don't believe He asked for anyone to raise a million dollars lest they die. I've yet to find a church that doesn't spend a preponderance of it's sermon time shilling for money. If one gives out of the goodness in one's heart, that is one thing... giving out of guilt or fear is just not right.

I'm also not an "organized religion" person, but as you all know, I am very involved in my church. I don't do it for the religion, I do it for the relationship with my God and fellow believers. God doesn't tell us that organized religion is important, but He does tell us that the relationship is very important. This relationship is the church, not the building. People are the church. Church is important to God.
I fully agree with the statement that you can worship wherever you are. Actually, the Bible calls us to make our daily lives worshipful and give praise to Him in everything. Personally, I think its better for someone to never go to church but yet truly worship God alone than to go to church ever week, shake a few hands and count the minutes until they can get back out of there.
I hear that a lot: I don't need a church to worship. I fully agree but many times I hear that and have to then ask, Ok, but DO YOU truly worship God on your own? If you do, that's great! If not, then that is just an excuse to stay out of church.
I agree Mema that God doesn't need cash but I do believe that He uses our cash to test us to see if we are walking our talk. No, that doesn't mean God wants us to throw millions of dollars away on stupid pet projects, but sometimes He uses money to make us decide if we love it or Him more.
I'm sorry Mema that you haven't found an accepting church. Men and women CAN be friends. Them telling you they can't is just crazy.
