The new media: Twitter?

This is a pretty interesting story about how Twitter and some other micro-blogging sites are affecting the way stories get out.

Yesterday somebody who was on one of the Ferry's that went out to rescue people took a photo from the boat and posted it along with his comments on Twitter.  Like the story says, it was well before any news media was there.

It's called a micro-blog. You type up to 160 characters into it and it gets distributed to any of your friends that are following you. Just another social networking tool.

MZ, Woo, Web, Muffy all use it as do I now.

It's less about blogging and more about letting your friends know what you're up to, or something interesting that happened, etc.

Well, with 5-yr old twins, I rarely do anything non-kid related, so I guess my friends aren't missing anything by me not being on twitter......

I have a Twitter account, but never use it.  I just don't have anything interesting to post once or more per day.  Same with Facebook; I think I change my status on there maybe once a week, if that.  I think I'm becoming more of a cave dweller than a social butterfly.  cry

Yeah, really slow today. Just tried to add bassgeek and Pambo117 and got the error message - twitter is a little stressed out right now  try later.
Im jerkbitch666 there btw and a regular twitter-geek.
But be warned this stuff can get pretty addictive ;)

I don't use my Facebook account for the purpose it was originally intended; I use it to play the game apps it has.  And I've noticed I'm slacking off on my Myspace account too.  I think I'm becoming bored with it. 

About the only place I post almost daily is here on the forum.  smile

I like Twitter because it is "right now" but yet, people still don't expect you to see every "tweet". Its kind of "on my terms" networking.

I also like Twitter because I get good stuff from the people I follow. Its a link to something cool, a pic they just took and posted, etc. Sure, there is silly stuff too, but its not just a "hello" with a sparkly, animated image attached.

The thing I find most useful about it is that I can follow like the Journal sports page, and the chicago sun times sports page. So anytime a new article is posted on the BRewers or the Cubs I hear about it right away.

That's kind of cool.
