Someone pointed out to me that you can go to Google Maps, input your street address, and find a street level view of your address... It sure is TRUE. Now some of you may be thinking this is cool, but I'm IN the picture of my address... me, my truck, my open garage door.... I'm seriously PIST! Yes, they pixellated my face and possibly my license plate number, but that is so not cool!

They are. This SUCKS. I can tell you that was like last July or August... I didn't even know that there was someone taking pictures. That is WAY too creepy.
I can even tell you I had JUST got home from work and was going to get my trash can because that is the only time I don't pull directly into the garage.

Yeah, but if you click on the arrows and pan around, I'm wondering how the HE!! they got down my easement without me noticing... I'm very aware of vehicles on my easement... particularly when I'm walking across it.
There is a view just before I got there, the view that immediately comes up is just after I got there, then if you pan around there are a couple taken from ON my easment because they are behind me.

I just tried it on my address, and the picture they have for my address is 'being disputed' on the website. And it certainly should be - it's definitely not my neighborhood.....
I was just going to say "It will be a long time before they ever get around to doing our town here". Then I decided I better check for sure.
Nebraska Highway #2 goes right through here and they have street level pics from the highway where it looks like they drove through here on their way somewhere else. None of the side streets off the state highway have pics yet.
I can see a shadow on the street of what was on top of the vehicle. I can see why you might not notice it if you saw it driving down the street. It looks like just a small mast on top of the roof.
I'm just flat out stunned. That could have been a real personal safety concern right then. I have no way of knowing when those were actually put out there, but I had a lot going on in life right then. It's good that the did go the step of pixellating, but still... it gives me the creeps.
AND if one more of my co-workers tells me that I reseed my HUGE freakin yard I'm gonna go stabby. I KNOW I NEED TO RESEED MY FRIGGING YARD!!! I DID! THE NEW STUFF DIED IN THE BLAZING HEAT!!!

That would have creeped me out, too, Mema. When I first say the Google Maps I couldn't believe they could do that without it being a safet concern. I think the street view is greta if you're trying to see what a business building looks like for a place you're looking for the first time, but I'm not fond of seeing private residences.
I forget where, but there's another site that allows you to view and zoom on arial photographs of addresses...that's a bit wierd too, allowing people to see the exact lay of the land.

I understand that their goal is to improve their offering, and I can imagine that it is going to be difficult to do this and avoid getting people in the pictures, but its just unnerving. When I got home last night, I "wandered around" my neighborhood. They captured pictures of some of the neighborhood kids too. Granted their faces are again pixellated, but it just strikes me as wrong.

Maybe I'm being overly paranoid about this, but I wouldn;t want my kids to be in these pictures either, pixelated or not. Not that it's a big secret that we have kids, but I don;t need their pictures to be out there on the internet for some previous or potential offender in the area to easily use to scout targets.
I don;t see why they couldn;t completely blot out people from the photos instead of just pixelating them. I'm no graphic artist, but I would think they would be able to do that....
I'm guessing it depends on who is working on that particular area. I read that they were supposed to cut people out entirely, but perhaps they're getting lazy to conserve time.
I'm sure there is a lot to the laziness theory. Everybody has their slackers. Its just wrong. Why make it easier for any predator to pick a target? It deeply worries me seeing (in this venue) pictures of the little neighborhood kids playing in their yards.
As for me, I can pretty much narrow down the time frame these pictures were taken by various visual cues in the pictures. I can tell you that it really surprises me that someone was that close to me taking the pictures and I apparently didn't notice it... that was summer 2007... part of the time while I was not active on the Forum. I had split up with the wuzband 2 or 3 months before AND had been involved in a couple nasty phone confrontations with one of his "associates" to whom he owed some money. Dude didn't know my address, but did know what I look like, what my vehicle looks like, and the general area where I live. How bad could that have been?

Mema - I am beginning to think maybe you are in the witness protection plan. Either that or you were special ops and you could be in danger if the very bad men found out where you are located.
Yep. I am going with that theory. I knew you were special.

Special Ed maybe. No... I just don't have one of those "shy and reclining" personalities, so I don't have a facility for backing down when threatened. This is probably not information, I know.
I do happen to own and proudly wear a "You Don't Know Me... Federal Witness Protection Program" tee shirt, but not because I'm "in". It's just dang funny.
At least I apparently wasn't armed in those shots.

I spoke with him for a few minutes yesterday. It was a hard day for him, which is completely understandable. I'm sure today will be even tougher. Tomorrow likely won't be a picnic either when all of the fuss has passed and the daily reality starts to set in. Did remind him that all of his friends here on the forum are thinking of him and are here when he needs us. He reminded me that it would be good if one of us would go on ahead and win the lottery...

Yeah, one of the guys here at the office mentioned that story to me. I did try to use their "report a problem" function and it errored on me every time. I decided to get over it.
