Baseball thread: The winter of accountability?

Gotta say, I'm lovin' this.  It seems like the owners have finally wised up and the economy has perhaps forced them to be more responsible.  The Yankees excluded of course.

Barry Bonds still can't get a deal.  I would bet, considering he's willing to play for league minimum, that 20 of the MLB teams would love to have him on their bench, but NO ONE wants the toxic media coverage that comes with signing a lying drug user.

Ben Sheets (of glass)
spent six years with the Brewers mostly on the DL.  He's an amazing pitcher cabapable of great things, but he's a cry baby that sits out five times a year with anything from strained butt muscles to blisters to hang nails.  He let us down when we needed him most last year due to yet another injury.

Still, we offered arbitration meaning a one year deal probably around $14 million.  He said no.  Today it's reported the last team that seemed interested (the Texas Rangers) have passed on him.  Two weeks until spring training and he's still without a team.  When he does sign it won't be for anywhere near the 14 million he turned down from us.

Manny Ramirez.  Possibly in the top three hitters in all of baseball.  Last year while still under contract he stopped playing for Boston because he wanted more money.  At one point he claimed his knee was hurt, when they had him take an MRI he presented the wrong knee for imaging.

Two weeks to spring training and no one is willing to take the head case on long term.  He's without a team and his options are quickly shrinking to the team that offered him a huge one year deal to begin with, the LA Dodgers.

Scott Boras, A-Hole agent extrodinaire is being lambasted in the papers by GM's across the league finally fed up with his tactics.  More and more teams are beginning to avoid drafting his players and don't want to trade for any players he represents.  They're finally realizing it's easier to deal with the other 300 agents in baseball that with this ego maniac.

Yes, it's been a good offseason (unless your name is Bonds, Boras, Ramirez or Sheets that is)

JR - like the new wallpaper. Ah, the smell of spring will soon be in the air.

In the meantime, since no one wants Sheets (I like that whole of glass thing too) the Brewers should be able to get him for a great price for a year when he comes crawling back. They can give him $4 or 5m. That is probably all he will pitch for the season anyway. He is way too fragile. Which is too bad, because when he is heathly, he can be great.

Manny is a jackass. And no one really wanted him but LA. He'll sign some deal he thinks is crappy and will stop playing and demand a trade by the deadline.

Bonds will never play again.

Oh yeah, and it is about time owners stop putting up with Boras and his crap.

Boris is really out of control isn't he?

The Dodgers offered Manny $25 million for one year (not surprising since everyone knows he'll only play for NEXT years contract). It would have made him the second highest paid player in baseball in 2009. Boris didn't even respond to the offer and eventually the Dodgers just pulled it back.

I wonder what Manny will do since he has nowhere to play. I can't see him taking a year off. I wonder if he will cave and be offered some pittance (kind of like Sheets) to play somewhere and someone could get hm for a steal this year. Because he has to play great again and not be stupid since he will be playing for a new contract.

I still don't know what was going through his head in Boston. You would think the fact his contract was up at the end of that year would have made him play harder.

He must have just convinced himself they needed him so badly that there was no way they wouldn't work out an early contract extension if he threatened to stop giving 100% until they did.

you know, I sure like to go to a game or 2 a year, but I'm just not into it as much anymore.

these guys are pullin in millions upon millions of dollars each year, while the rest of the world is goin to hell. For playing a kids game....

I think I'll go watch the teams in the park play, for free. home plate seats too....

Well, they just broke the news that Ben Sheets needs surgery to repair his pitching arm. He must have found out when doing a workout for the Rangers. no.gif

Better yet, they're claiming the Brewers have to pay for the surgery because he hurt his arm as a Brewer. Gee, I didn't know the tens of millions of dollars we pay these guys didn't get them any health care!

It's almost as stupid as the fact major leaguers still get 150 bucks a day in meal money for every day they're on the road! angered.gif

He was hurt an didn't know it before now? Bull. He probably hurt himself during someone's tryout. I am sure the Brewers are saying get real and the won't pay for his surgery and subsequent rehab. Prove you hurt it here. If he wasn't under contract too bad. Guess who isn't pitching this year.

I really can't afford to go to games much anymore. I make it to a few. More if someone takes me. That meal money seems excessive.

The Brewers do a good job of making games affordable.

Lots of good ten dollar seats available and lots of dollar hot dog days nod.gif

Yeah, well, it is a little less crowded there. Maybe not the last year or two though. We have $10 seats. Usually they are standing room only. It has been extra crowded since they opened the new ballpark. We did have a lot of sellouts last year. And that was well before they made the playoffs. The prices aren't bad. But $30 for a good seat around first or third base, $10 or 12 for parking, the hour drive from the house. Not really worth it. And that is before you sit down and have a pretzel and a soda. Even a lesser seat price is still tough. There isn't a bad view in the new park though. Dollar dog days are always during the week. I can't really get to a game during the week.
