25 Random U Facts?

gee I don't know if I can come up with that many.....confuse.gif

Anyone can think up 25 random facts about themselves to share, and the equivalent of an e-mail chain letter worming its way through Facebook will tempt you to try.

It's called "25 Random Things About Me," and if you are a member of the popular online social network, eventually this viral, voyeuristic venture is going to try sucking you in.

Here's the way it works: a friend "tags" you in a note in which they have written 25 random semi-personal factoids. Now that you've been tagged - i.e. linked to their "25 Random Things About Me" list - you are tasked with writing your own, as well as dragging 25 others into the chain.

You also must tag the person who initially tagged you - presumably so they know you followed through on their request.

My first request came from a college friend I hadn't spoken with in 10 years. Her "25 Random" helped catch me up with her life with casual items on motherhood, domestic life and what was on her mind at the time:

"I sometimes wonder if I am cut out for motherhood," she wrote as her second random fact.

The next tag came from a longtime and valuable source, a technologist and entrepreneur who always has great ideas. His list read like it was carefully crafted with an interesting mix of the personal and professional:

"I have two patents attributed to me," he wrote as No. 7. "I sold both of them for $1 each and I consider this fair."

The third "25 Random" tag came from another college friend, a buddy I had kept in touch with but hadn't seen face-to-face since graduation. Her list overall was deep and self-reflective and put a lot of herself out there.

And those were just the people who had linked to me in their "Random 25." I clicked through profiles of friends, co-workers and contacts and discovered other lists.

A few were painfully boring, as mean as that might sound. Some were quick, pithy and cute. Others were sobering, serious and raw. And a few made me laugh out loud:

"Sometimes I change the words to Journey's 'Don't Stop Believing' to 'just a small town girl, born and raised in South Beloit,'" one particularly talented co-worker wrote.

I recoil from engaging in such online exhibitionism and usually avoid e-solicitations, ignoring for years the various quizzes, surveys and games arriving in e-mail chain letters. And these "random things" worried me because of the potentially personal nature of the game. We all have an Internet identity for the world to see, assuming someone cares to look, and maintaining its integrity is important.

Still, this Facebook chain was difficult to ignore. In addition to the tags from friends, "25 Random" was constantly popping up in Facebook's daily newsfeed. And unlike e-mail chain letters where you send your response into the vacuum of the Internet, Facebook offered feedback and follow up. People commented on others' lists and others would comment on their comments, spinning the game into an ongoing online discussion.

So I begrudgingly gave in, pouring out 25 tidbits in a quick stream of consciousness made up of what came to mind first. Still, I didn't publish it right away - every writer needs an editor, in my humble opinion, so I asked my editor to read it first.

My "25 Random" didn't spawn the response of some others, but the friends who commented make me smile:

"Which version of 'Pride & Prejudice?'" one Facebook friend wrote. "I can't believe BDW (Billy Dee Williams) was mean ... What a mind blow...."

I did this on Facebook.  I'm sure some of it isn't news here.:

25 Random Things About Me

1: I love to dance. When I go somewhere for the purpose of dancing, I let loose and really get into it. Therefore, I probably look like an absolute idiot. But I have fun.

2: I'm getting over my claustrophobia. When needed, I can now ride in an elevator, although I usually do prefer to take the stairs. I really want to get over it so I can go scuba diving.

3: I used to play the clarinet in middle school, but I got out of it in high school so I could get into art and theater instead.

4: I played the clarinet because that's what my mom played. If I were to choose again, I would've picked drums.

5: I can sew, but I don't really enjoy it. I like the creativity of it and I'm proud of the things I've made, but it takes so long. It's not like I can just take a few minutes here and there to work on a project, I have to have a few hours for anything other than a little mending.

6: I sewed my wedding dress, my maid of honor's dress, and the shirt my husband wore for our wedding. I also sewed my friend's wedding dress. I really hope she liked it.

7: We had a renaissance wedding. The ceremony was under a willow tree by the river. It was beautiful.

8: If I were to do it all over again, we would've skipped the renaissance wedding, went to Key West, and had a pirate wedding on a boat.

9: When I go on long car trips, I turn up my music really loud and sing almost the entire way. I'm sure other drivers think I'm nuts.

10: As far as I know, I am allergic to, in order from most to least: maple, oak, dust, corn, egg whites, mold, grass. I'm currently trying to figure out if I'm allergic to anything else.  Yay.

11: British, Australian, and similar accents totally make me melt. The best accent ever belongs to Gideon Emery. (You may know him as Balthier from Final Fantasy.) Sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJvZMKZ96W8

12: I've only ever had one hangover. After a particularly bad day at work, I asked my husband to make me kamikazes.

13: I've only ever gotten so drunk that I puked once. It was at a party, we were playing a drinking game, but I was drinking wine while everyone else was drinking beer. At midnight, I knew I was drunk and tried to sober myself up. Someone else had locked themselves into the bathroom, so I had to use the sink. I did end up sobering myself up before I had to pick Brian up at 5am.

14: I'm a video game geek. I've always loved video games. I like puzzles, rpgs, and action adventure games. I'm not a big fan of shooting games, because they're too monotonous, but I don't mind if there's a shooting part in the game I'm playing.

15: I miss my ex boyfriend. We were better friends than a couple, but he taught me a lot about relationships. I didn't realize it then, but I didn't treat him as well as I could have, and I regret it. I wish I could talk to him again.

16: I wrote my first novel last November during NaNoWriMo. I'm in the rewriting and editing process now. Going into it, I didn't know if it would be any good, but once I polish it up, I'd like to send it out to see if any publishers would be interested in it.

17: The ocean is the most awesome (as in, full of awe) thing ever. If I ever had a transcendental moment, it was either when we were on a boat in the Caribbean far enough away that we couldn't see land, or later that night sitting on a dock looking at the dark ocean where the sky met the sea.

18: I want to add some funky color in my hair. I'm thinking purple highlights in the front. The only thing stopping me is that I don't want to pay a whole lot to do it but I'm too scared to do it myself.

19: I might be a little bit of an adrenaline junkie. I really want to skydive. I'd also like to go bungie jumping. I think it would be neat to learn to fly.

20: In 8th grade, I decided I wanted to be a graphic designer. Here I am.

21: Other professions I've considered are: teacher (high school), psychologist, and politician. Yes, politician. I really want to help people.

22: If I won the lottery, I would consider going back to college to study sexual psychology. Too bad the Kinsey Institute isn't located in the tropics.

23: I only took my husband's name of Hartz because I thought it was cool. Otherwise, I probably would've kept my maiden name of Hubbard.

24: In the same regard, I hate being addressed as Mrs. Brian Hartz. I am my own person. Brian loves that, and that's one of the many reasons I love him.

25: I pride myself in my eclecticness. I love trying new things, even if they don't have anything to do with my current hobbies or interests.

25 random things about me:

1.  As a teenager I was every parent's worst nightmare.

2.  I had won a full ride scholarship to Julliard, but didn't go.  By the time I graduated from high school, I hated school with a passion and didn't want to spend another 4 years in school.

3.  I didn't marry the love of my life.  I should have, and I had the opportunity to do so, but I walked away.

4.  I wanted to be a homicide detective when I grew up.

5.  I have more than a passing interest in metaphysical ideas and paranormal activity.

6.  I miss the rock concerts from the 70's.  Tickets were so much cheaper back then, and in my opinion, the music was better than what's coming out now.

7.  I love to read.  Reading is the gateway to letting my imagination soar.

8.  I'm a video game junkie.  My favorite games to play are Guitar Hero, Halo, and Ratchet & Clank.

9.  I hate snakes!  Sometimes I have nightmares that there's a whole bunch of them at the bottom of a pit and someone pushes me down in it with them.

10. I love old movies.  Jimmy Stewart, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, and Bette Davis are some of my favorite actors/actresses.

11. I want to travel the world.  Japan, New Zealand, Greece, Australia, and Italy are some of the countries I'd love to spend some time in.

12.  I wish I knew how to sail.  I've been drawn to sailboats since I've been a kid, but don't have the foggiest idea how to sail a boat.

13.  I know how to sew and make my own clothes, but I don't enjoy doing it.  My grandma taught me how, and she bought me my first sewing machine when I was 13.

14.  I love to go fishing.  I don't care if I catch anything or not, and I never keep any fish I catch, but there's nothing like spending a summer day out in a boat on a lake with a fishing pole in my hand.

15.  I like to go camping, though at my age I'd rather take the camper than the tent.  Over the last 48 years, I've camped in every state park and state forest campground in MI.

16.  When I was 6, someone tried to abduct me on my way home from school.  I can still remember what the guy looked like, what kind of car he drove, and what he said to me.

17.  I miss my best friend.  He died 9 months ago and his death left a gigantic hole in my life.

18.  I love thunderstorms.  When it storms at night, I'll turn off the lights and watch it lightning.  I'd like to be a storm chaser.

19.  I have a cell phone, but never use it.  Most of the time I don't even carry it with me.   Right now it's sitting on my dresser, collecting dust.

20. I don't have an answering machine or subscribe to voicemail.  I figure if someone calls and I'm not home, they'll call back.

21.  I can live without watching tv.  I really wouldn't miss it if someone broke in and stole all of our tvs.  I'd buy a new one, but only because I'd need it to play my video games on.

22.  I'd like to go bobsledding.  I've watched it on the Olympics and it looks like it'd be fun; scary, but fun.

23.  I know how to ice skate and roller skate, but I've never tried rollerblades.

24.  I'd like to take ballroom dance classes.  I'd like to learn how to waltz, rhumba, and tango.

25.  I like to go to muscle car shows.  There's just something about fast cars that makes my blood race.

3. I still have no idea what I want to be when I grow up.

4. I truly dislike being cold and most things about winter in general.

14. I would like to have a boat... like a cabin cruiser or a pontoon boat. One you could spend the day on comfortably.

15. I don't do seafood.

16. Someday I'd like to take a kickboxing class.

17. I talk to my two best friends almost every day, just because.

18. I wish I could afford to buy a really old house and fix it up. I enjoy doing things like that. I even work on my own vehicle sometimes. I'm one of those people who will try to fix anything.

19. I sing (very badly) along with the radio when I drive. I've been known to sing at other motorist who happen to catch me singing along with the radio. laughing.gif

20. I usually find humor in everyday life, sometimes even at incredibly inappropriate moments. It's just the way my mind works.

23. When I was a kid, I tried to teach myself how to play the guitar, though I don't even know how to read music.

24. I'm surprised how much I like being a grandmother, even though I never really wanted to be a mom. Ironically, being a mom to my stepsons is probably one of the best things that ever happened to me. Now I can't imagine my life without the lot of them.

25. I've had a really hard time thinking of 25 random thoughts about myself.

I think we all have that "what if I had done that one thing differently" moment to ponder in life. I know for a fact my life would have been vastly different had I done my one thing different, but I'm not that it would be a good different.

Yeah, and when I think about that, its not the same thing ever time. Things like:

What if I had broken up with my girlfriend before we got married?

What if I had gone to accounting school?

What if I had just stayed home to help with the family farm?

What if I had moved to Tennessee when I was once considering it?

Etc.

They were short periods of time. When I got kicked, I was awake before the ambulance got there. In football, the coaches were just getting to me when I came back. In the motorcycle crash, when I woke up, the bike was on top of me still running so I assume it was not very long or it wouldn't have still been running.

Those things may explain a lot of why I am the way I am today.

7. I have "worked for food" before.

8. If given the opportunity, I wouldn't change anything in my past. I am content now. I wouldn't want to mess that up.

10. Before Isaac stole the spotlight, I was Mr. DS's hunting buddy.
