You know times are getting tough when...

A bill has been introduced in the Kansas State Senate to eliminate the death penalty. This is not because of the cruel and unusual punishment arguments. Not because anyone has wrongfully been put to death. No, none of that... it is a cost cutting measure. blankstare.gif Apparently they figure they could save on average $500,000 per case if they take the death penalty off the table. Not that this would help the 10 people currently on death row in Kanas, but if this passes then the heinous murders going forward would not be eligible. no.gif

That is what I have been wondering too. confuse.gif One has to account for medical bills, dental bills, food, rooming, and legal expenses during the lifetime of a prisoner. I can certainly see being more judicious about selecting the cases where the state pursues the death penalty, but doing away with it completely seems a bit overboard. What's next? No life without the possibility of parole?

well, thats what we have here in wisconsin, but I'm guessing that the 500 gs must be the legal cost of the appeals, delays, reviews etc.....i.e. the lawyer fees......but of course, hey?hmm.gif

That is what they are saying... on average each death penalty case costs the state $1.2 million versus $750,000 for non-death penalty cases.

WOW! California is considering kicking loose 75,000 inmates because they cannot afford medical care for all of the people in their system and some institutions are at 200% capacity. no.gif

They'll boot out the pot heads.  But first, they'll give them all "prescriptions."

I guess this is the way of things. It will probably start happening everywhere. The whole idea of cutting back on law enforcement really bothers me, especially when there is so much talk of the new administration wanting to monkey with the gun laws. If the legal system can't handle criminals, then making it harder for decent people to be able to reasonably defend themselves and their families makes utterly no sense.

Agreed! I can't really justify buying any additional guns, but I do buy American made products whenever possible.

Well, you have a few firearms. I don't have any. no.gif Sad, I know. I just never made up my mind and persued it. I think I am gonna get a .45. A nice, American made .45.

Alas, I must confess that my beloved .45 was manufactured in Spain. I bought it from my father... he was a licensed firearms dealer. Betty Badazz (my street sweeper) however is all American made. She is actually what I consider my "home protection".

No. laughing.gif Betty B. is a 12 gauge, pump action, short barrel (at the legal limit) shotgun. The kind used typically by police officers on riot duty, only I don't have the bean bag shells.

Just read this on the MSNBC website:

Restroom ransom? Airline mulls toilet toll
Irelands low-cost carrier considers pay-to-use toilets, CEO admits

DANG! That is harsh!! It's not like you get exactly swanky facilities in an airplane toilet. It's basically a Johnny On The Spot with a semi-functional sink. :disgust:
