Goodbye Jewel Case?

I haven't bought a physical CD in probably over 3 years, so I thought I'd ask all of you if what I saw at Sam's Club last night has become the norm, or if it's just something exclusive to Sam's.

Their CD department, which is pretty small, had about 80% of the CD's in thin, cardboard sleeves.  Kind of like small versions of the old LP style.

It didn't matter if it was a new release (Springsteen, Taylor Swift) or an old one (Millennium collections, MJ's Thriller, etc), the vast majority did not have a jewel case anymore.

Anyone know if this is a trend?

Me too! I'm glad I'm all digital now. I know back when I had a couple thousand CD's every so often an artists would put a CD out like that for environmental purposes and I wouldn't even buy it because it would just get lost in my cd rack anyway.

The jewel case protects the artwork and makes sure it'll last forever. Those damn cardboard sleeves wear out, get bend corners, etc. HATE EM TOO!

I don't like the cardboard sleeves either. I don't mind the cardboard self cases that fold out as much.

But I think all the CDs I got for Christmas were in plastic cases. It's probably a Sam's Club thing, cheaper packaging so they can lower the prices.

I've seen a lot of the new releases in those type of cardboard sleeves at Walmart too, I think. We live in a disposable minded society these days.

Ah! Wal-Mart & Sam's are the same company so MZ is probably right. THey probably cut a special deal.

But I would think it would hurt sales for them. A lot of people i know don't like the cardboard cases.

It makes sense that Sams and Walmart would both have the same packaging, it's the same company.

The next time I'm at the book store, I think I'll look.

A ton of the reissues are coming out only in cardboard...as for some of the new stuff...Springsteen is cardboard everywhere, the Eagles were cardboard but only available in Sams/WalMart....Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band's Greatest Hits (new release only available at Sams/WalMart) is in a jewel case....

Me thinks that is cost less for cardboard than plastic, and I think that's the only reason behind the move...plus a few artists are actually enviornmentally friendly and like the cardboard....

Count me in as a hater of the cardboard cases.  Whenever I get a cd in one, I photocopy the front & back of the "case", then put the disc in a jewel case along with the "album" cover I copied.

I'm a huge fan of just letting them float around on my back seat.
Actually, I like a cd carrying case. I've got one monster size one that carries 200. I rarely use that for my car. I have a 24 carrier.
I love album artwork but, it's not critical. I sort of like my own take. Stolen images from the internet on a burned cd.
