death bed confession...but....

March17Dumbcriminal James Brewer, like all of us, has made a few mistakes in his life.

Mistake #1:  Allegedly shooting a man to death in 1977 in a dispute over a woman. This may not have seemed like a problem at the time, as after the incident he changed his name, moved away and was never arrested for the crime. Still, it would come back to haunt him.

Mistake #2: While in the hospital last week, suffering the effects of a stroke, Brewer (pictured) asked his wife to contact Oklahoma authorities to tell them that he wanted to make a deathbed confession to the decades-old murder. "He wanted to cleanse his soul, because he thought he was going to the great beyond, a Shawnee police detective said.

Mistake #3?

Not moving on to the great beyond.

Yes, after confessing to a murder and recovering from his stroke, James Brewer surrendered to Tennessee authorities last Thursday, appeared in court yesterday and is being held in jail until his bail hearing on March 30.

Now is there anything else you want to tell us?

That is kind of justice, but it is not nearly enough. He had a chance to live his life.

Can you imagine how his wife must feel, assuming that she didn't know?

Man, if she knew and she was going to be introuble too, she should have talked him out of it. Or had him write a letter and get it notorized. Only to have it sent after he died. Hello. Smart planning. Just takes two minutes to figure out.

Like I said... she is a moron. If he wanted to confess, she should have called a priest.

Nope. Just the letter would have him still roasting for eternity... at least that's how it was explained to me.

No, a letter wouldn't get him in and it doesn't accept responsibility for his actions. But if he wanted someone to know, that would have been the way to do it. Although, I can't see how 30 years later a confession and probably less than 10 years time (I don't know how old he is)gets him into heaven either. A priest may have easied his concerns or his soul, but that isn't very remorseful and I don't think that would get him in either.

Well, the way it was explained to me by a Roman Catholic priest actually made sense to me. The way he put it is this: You are not saved until you are dead. Doesn't really matter how you live your life, as long as before you die you really and truly repent and sincerely ask God for forgiveness. But that is the trick to the whole thing. You really have to mean that with every fiber of your being. If you do that, then you are saved. If not...suffer the consequences of the life you elected to live.

I've only physically been to Mass a few times since the above referenced sermon. Fundamental reason: that which I should confess and ask forgiveness for I cannot truly ask forgivness for because I'm not really sorry I did it. Haven't found a way to resolve that little connundrum. Good thing I like summer, huh?
