Futility: Learning to recognize the signs

What in the world is this crew of Somali pirates thinking?  They are  4 guys in a wooden life boat that is out of gas, yet they are trying to hold an American container ship Captain hostage for ransom. They are staring down the barrels of an American Battleship. Think it might just be time to give up?

I'm watching the news coverage right now. I don't really get why Maersk is wanting to negotiate with these people without the help of the Navy. Seems a simple enough answer to me...park the battleship within eyesight range of the lifeboat and simply make the point to them that they are going NO WHERE. If they kill the American, they all die. If they had him over unharmed, they will live. No gas, no food, no escape, definitely out gunned... logic will eventually prevail.

I guess I just don't understand where "negotiations" come into the picture. It seems more to me a waiting game. This is 4 guys (granted, they are armed) in an open waterway in an insufficient vessel lacking a means of propulsion. There is no cavalry coming to the rescue. They are being inhibited by the American battle group watching the every move on the little wooden boat and are for darn sure not letting anyone else close to it. These people do not have a position from which to negotiate.

I thought we don't negotiate with terrorists? Granted, they are not exactly terrorists, but it is the same principle.

Maersk is not an American company. It just so happens that the entire crew of the Maersk Alabama is American. To me it seems ridiculous for a company operating in this area of the world to not arm their ships against this contingency. Granted, the unarmed Alabama crew overpowered the pirates and took their own ship back, along with one of the pirates and the Captain of the Alabama was attempting to trade his captivity for further unecumbered passage on to their destination, but this whole situation could have been avoided with a few armed guards aboard the Alabama in the first place.

These people are terrorists. We should not negotiate with terrorists. Maersk didn't want the US Navy to get involved, but it seems that is not their call given that the hostage in question is an American citizen. Maersk now has their ship back, cargo intact, with 18 US servicemen on board assuring its safe passage on to Kenya... its original destination. Why would they want to give these terrorist pirates ANYTHING?

Seems like if the governments of the countries that are home to these shipping companies and crews would take more of a hostile stand toward these pirates, the pirates would quickly understand that they are not in a winning situation and will move along to other means of making money.

True, but so far it looks like the new administration might be doing the right thing here... at least so far. They did send a small battle group to the scene. Hopefully they will not see fit to back down to 4 hoopleheads in a boat with no gas.  That would just be dumb.

Exaaaaaactly! I understand wanting a peaceable end to this. That is the best idea. But this shouldn't be allowed to go on for another day. The 55 gallon drum of whoop azz is there in the form of a Destoyer and its associated escort ships. It's backup (as if it needs any) is on the way... another battle friggate along with its escorts. Guess who has more bullets? If there is a fight, I really don't think the 4 hooples in the (effectively) row boat have much of a chance.

If it drags out another day, I think they should bring in a SEAL team or a few snipers to end it. Either way, odds are Captain Phillips lives.

From the latest I've heard, the boat does have some form of a cover and about 10 days worth of food. They have a radio through which Captain Phillips has been able to communicate with the Navy. One of the pirates even has a satellite phone and some reporter somewhere actually did get in touch with them...he said he was very busy and couldn't talk then because they were surrounded by war ships but did request prayers on his behalf. weirdface.gif Scuse me, Somali dooshbag... but you put yourself in this position by perpetrating a variety of illegal acts... piracy and kidnapping to be specific. These are not really Godly acts. Why pester the Almighty since you already saw fit to disregard Him?

Fascinatingly enough, in their communications with the Navy, they have not requested ransom either. Perchance they miss the point of their own dumb actions? Why not give it up now? Not the brightest beads on the rosary?

Just checked in wiht the news and apparently the Navy sprung Captain Phillips earlier today. Go figure, 3 of the 4 pirates didn't fair so well.
