I'm sure it will come to no surprise to any of you that our little station that could is hurting right now.
As we approach 2 years of being listener owned we've lost enough owners that we are no longer financially self-sufficient. Even more concerning (because now that I'm working full time I'd be willing to subsidize the station costs again) is the fact that listenership has plummeted.
Five years ago internet radio seemed like the future of radio. But things have rapidly changed and now we're almost an internet relic. During our two years of listener ownership we've continuously seen our daily numbers drop to the point where it's typical now for only six or seven people to tune in at the PEAK all week.
Blip.fm, Pandora and other customizable listening options have taken away even some of our hard-core listeners. Personally while I understand the draw of hearing only what you want, when you want, I do think in the long run it's just one more stone on the path to the demise of the record industry. At some point you have to have an outlet for new and alternate music, and as people isolate themselves into their home-made playlists and iPods there becomes less and less opportunity for new music to be heard. But that's for another thread and another day.
The bottom line is that after over six months of serious consideration (Web can attest to that as I've discussed this with him for some time) I believe the time has come to bring an end to Freeze-Frame Radio.
Because most of the owners have made annual donations that started in mid-October we'll continue to be listener owned until November 1'st. After October 1'st no new donations will be accepted.
More than likely JD & I will keep the station running for a month or so after that, hopefully getting together a few times to give the old girl a proper send off. During the final month or two the request system will be opened up to everyone just like it was in the past.
It's worth noting that during the last two years we've not gained a single new listener/owner. Clearly closing the request system to the general public played a large part in ending any growth we were experiencing.
If by some miracle in the final few months when we open up the system again the listener numbers start improving and we start bringing in a few new listeners I would seriously consider keeping the station going and paying for it myself again. But I think that window of opportunity has probably been shut.
One other possibility I'm considering is keeping the site open as a sort of podcast network where users could submit their own content to be offered up. If the site were left open it would also give JD & I the opportunity to occassionally go live for a month here and there just for the pure joy of it.
I'd like to take a moment to thank everyone for sticking with us as long as you have. We've had some tremendous highs and a few big lows over the years, but overall the experience has been overwhelmingly positive.
We've all made some potentially life-long friends through Freeze-Frame Radio and it's forum, that alone makes it all worth it in my book.

The forum is independent of the station by the way, so hopefully we'll all stay in contact for many years to come via the forum. Plus if JD & I decide to do a live broadcast here or there we'd be able to let everyone know.
I have given the podcast option a thought for a bit, that might be a very viable option to continue on keepin the music we love alive and shared.
This has been a wonderful run and overall a wonderful experience, and I can't thank JR enough for making it possible. Some people are those "one day I should" or "Wouldn't it be cool if" people. JR was not one to stay on the sidelines and do that. He went and did it. Kudos.

I've been wondering about this lately too. As sad as it makes me, I think you're making the right decision. I've mentioned before that I was concerned about ownership dropping over time. I was hoping we could get some new listeners in the meantime, but you're right, internet radio isn't where it's at anymore.
While it makes me sad to know the station will probably be gone in October, at least we know it will be up and running until that time so that, in itself, makes me happy to hear.
Also very glad to know the forum will continue to be here. I know I've made some really wonderful friendships here, and it would be heartbreaking if I couldn't log in and talk with all of you whenever I wanted to.
JR, it would be cool if you and JD could do a few shows together once you shut it down. I wasn't around during the early days of Freeze Frame Radio, and I'd love to hear both of you together, live, in the studio.
And I'm with JD, if it has to go to a podcast option, that would be ok with me....at least there'd still be some music.
with the podcast, any one of us could create a show and share the music we love and why we love it. Sure I've been on the side of the microphone, but it sure would be fun to hear some of you do a show of your own. I have no idea how the music liscensing would work with that tho, well, at least not yet....

Good point JD. I'd be willing to renew and put my ownership share towards licensing for podcast shows. Maybe without a deadline, I'd actually do some weird newz again.
I'd like it for that same reason too Mz. busy running around, get to the studio just in the nick of time. no real thought out prep al ot of times. but a podcast would allow for that real quality and sharing of information with the music.

Without a doubt the licensing fees would be an issue for podcasting. Obviously the Weird Newz wouldn't be a problem, or if we wanted to do any other talk-based stuff.
We'd have to check into if there's a way to pay royalty fees on podcasts. If it's cost-prohibitive we could always just share them amongst ourselves. Technically that's not allowed, but screw them. A group of friends should be able to share what's essentially a mix-tape with each other!!!
If I keep things going on my own dime past the end of listerner ownership, for any length of time, JD would ALWAYS be welcome to do his shows on Sunday nights, even if it's just an airing of his podcast. I think I know a way I could make sure royalties got paid during a rebroadcast of a podcast. It would be time consuming, but could be done.
I'm sure as we get closer to the end of the listener-ownership period the plans will begin to solidify.
Half the time I'm leaving responses on my own wall that the original person I'm responding to never even gets to see unless they come visit my page again.
I much prefer the forum to any of those social networking sites.
I only bother with Facebook in small intervals. I don't like messing with it during the work day. This is what I love about the forum. It is so much nicer of a venue to chat with everybody.

JR = Facebook Noob!!! To reply to something someone posted, you just click on "comment". If you lost track of a "conversation" but you know it was within a few hours, just keep hitting "Show older posts" at the bottom of your wall page until you find what you're looking for. If you want to leave a new message specifically on someone's wall, click on Friends at the top of Facebook, click on the name you want, and voilla!
No wonder you never respond to any of the goofy pics I send you. You're a NOOB!
lol. I knew I could count on you to make fun of me Ghost.
Ok, but usually what happens is I get an email on my iPhone that someone left me a message, so I follow the link and it shows on my wall that there's a comment. I'll reply to that comment, but it winds up on my wall.
If I go to the persons page there's nothing on their wall to comment on, so replying there starts a new thread that makes no sense because the comment I'm replying to isn't there.
What's the proper place to leave it?
I was just commenting directly on my wall and my sister made fun of me because she said the person who left it wouldn't see my reply unless they came looking for it.
Dadgum internet, why's it all gotta be so difficult?
Seriously. MySpace and Facebook have HORRIBLE interfaces. It's like something I would have expected to find online 10 years ago.
I don't have that problem. Whenever I comment, it's always from my computer and I make sure it's on the Wall page, not my Profile page. That could be part of your problem......you're leaving the comment on your Profile instead of on your Wall.
OK, Ghost, you've lost me. When I go to someone's profile page, I see posts that have been left on their wall along with their recent activity.
Also, when someone responds to a comment that I made on their wall, I get a notification that they responded. Usually I get both an email and a notification in the lower right hand corner of Facebook.

Oops, you're right Mz......I just checked and yeah, comments from others are on the profile page. And yes, you do get a notification when someone replies to something you've posted......I probably get an email notification too, don't know, as all that stuff goes directly to my Junk folder in email which I never check.
So if JR is making comments to someone, they have to be showing on that person's profile page too.
So I'm stumped JR as to what the problem is for you.
The music is what brought this wonderful group of people together and I will miss the music, but it's nice to know that we'll all still be able to remain connected through the fourm....................................................................

aaaargh it's all so confusing. I miss the days when we all just CALLED each other!
Don't worry JR. You can call me. I'll tell you that the Brewers are going to fall down and not make the playoffs. The I'll tell you that the Packers need a quarterback. And you'll tell me the Eagles are even a football team. You know, blah blah and so on.
Or I could just call and say hi.
