Do You Play?

Hey!

If you are a musician, or know someone who is, don't hesitate to get a hold of me to find out where to submit your demo/cds. Along with the greats in jazz, I like to feature "up and comers" in jazz and experiemental/fusion music on Jazz 101.

Those of you who tune in regularly have heard music from The Bruce Middle Group, Joe Finn, The Matt Roberts Quartet, and more. (See links from the Jazz 101 page in the Programs link). I've gotten a lot of great feedback from these guys- its as much of a kick for them to know that they are getting their music "out there" as it is for me to be able to feature them on my show.

So- a shout out! Get played on Jazz 101!

MJ- I don't think that is the direction that Jazzy D wanted this thread to go in.  (but do you live in Miami??)

Hey JD, you already have my disc for Late Night Drive....we are going in the studio in August to finish the album, but it wouldn't hurt my feelings if you played any of my songs you do have until the album is done.

Star, you have an open invitation to be one of our back up singers!  Sorry, but we are based in Wisconsin...so I am guessing the commute might be an inconvenience.  But Star-dom awaits

Jeremy, I am already mowing your lawn at your palatial estate in July....heck ...I will throw in August if you "persuade" JD to give us a couple of spins

Ah "Dylan"....I know Dylan. You got it pal. I remember "My Baby Waits". I'll give that a spin. It'll be cool to hear the new cd too!

Dylan-

I am a midwest girl at heart so if anything does bring me back that way you've just given me reason to make it Milwaukee.  Plus, I have some friends there.  It would be great to sing back-up with your group.  What kind of music is it?

-STAR

PS Are you really playing the Bradley?  That is a huge venue.  It's where I graduated!

Hey Star,

We don't have anything scheduled for the Bradley yet, but dare to dream.  If you want to hear a sample of my music, request a song by "Late Night Drive" called "My baby Waits".  Jeremy has it in the rotation.  He has a few more, but thats the one he chose to include.  We should be finishing an album up this summer, and I can keep everyone posted if they like.

By the way, there will always be an extra mirophone waiting for you if you are in the area Star.

I write songs, but I've only had one used and it was by a local band and they slaughtered it.  It was titled "Let's Make This Last Dance Last Forever" and they did...

I can sing.  I have a low, husky, alto voice.  We should get a FFR band together.  That would be awesome.

I've had a good response to this! So far there are 2 jazz vocalist cds coming in that I can get into the jazz 101 rotation! Depending on when these arrive I might feature an hour on Jazz 101 of just artists who have directly sent me stuff to play! Featured no where else on internet radio!

Jazz 101! Bust out that book that you've been meaning to read or write, and a bottle of wine! & tune in Sunday nights!

About 20 or so.  I have a song called "Who Do You Love" that I really like a lot.

"Who do you love when your world comes tumbling all around and you look to find you're all by yourself?  Don't come crying to me, I've moved on, you're history and, baby, history don't repeat itself."

I would love for Gretchen Wilson to sing that song.  She is so cool and she's from around where I live.  Lori Franke, a new up and coming artist is from my home town and I'm hoping to get her to record some of my songs.  Keep your fingers crossed.

I have an electric bass that I "play" a little. I think it would be best for all parties involved though if I stayed behind the sound board, drove the truck, moved heavy objects, etc.

Since the only instrument I play is the radio I'll stick to running camera.  We could produce a live DVD!!!  Call it Freeze-Frame Aid.

Trish,

That is very cool.  How long have you been writing?  Do you write both the lyrics and the melody?  I hope you find an outlet for those songs.  That is the big reason I put a band together.  You have enough creative contol which makes it is so much easier to insure that the music you envision matches the version the world gets to hear.

Hey Dovetails,

As a rule of thumb, the world would be a much better place if everyone did their share of heavy lifting.  But life is short, so for God's sake...keep giving the bass some exercise too

I had a really cool music teacher when I was in 5th and 6th grade that started a songwriting class.  About 5 kids were selected to be in it and I was one of them.  I've written songs since then.  I write the words and I sing the melody.  I don't have the melodies down on paper.  I read music and play the piano a little, but I just haven't taken the time to write them down.  I wrote one for my mother for Mother's Day one year and I taped it and gave it to her.  She loved it (but she's a little biased).  I wrote more when I was a teenager (teenage angst is good for SOMETHING).  I think the quality of the songs that I write now are better, though.  I love it, I just don't have time for it as much as I used to.

I know what you mean about creative control.  I let a band use a song of mine and they really slaughtered it.  I was so excited to hear them perform it and it was just awful.  Hopefully I will find someone to use them.  I have songs sitting around not being used and 4 romance novels sitting around not being published.  I just don't have time to market them like I should.  It's really a waste.

Trish,

I know when I was in my 20's, the things I had to write and sing about are different than what I write about today.  There is just a natural progression.

It sounds like you have a real creative side.  I know as personal obligations like work and family make demands on our time, its harder to find time for creativity (although work and family give us depth for writing).

Music and writing are great platforms for that inner voice we all have.  The fact that you have the talent to give your thoughts a forum is something alot of people dont have.  Hopefully, when the opportunity presents itself, you will be able to share your music and fiction with the world.

I'm sorry that band tortured your song.  I would be willing to cover a song for you and give you creative control just so you can see what one of your songs sound like fleshed out in a way you hear it in your head.  Just a thought.

I'll design the CD cover!  Unless of course, you need some backup clarinet!  Or, if you need a backup singer and we record it in a car or the shower!

I would like to learn how to play lap guitar, but first, I need a lap guitar, and then I need someone who not only knows how to play but can teach me!  Ah, maybe someday...

Mz,

I need someone to do the cover art!  Your hired!

I have a personal bias, but I feel everyone should take up a musical instrument. If you have an interest in lap guitar, go for it!  You only live once.

If we start doing any theatre work, I'm in.

Actor, singer, dancer (kinda), director.  If Mz does the CD art, I'll handle the in-store promotional display.

We're getting WAY to organized!

I REALLY need to update my website, but if anyone wants to check out my work, go to www.hartz-design.com and click on Portfolio.  There's a self portrait of me in there too, but it's pretty old now.

AH HA!  This just keeps coming up!  I'll take all opportunities that come my way.

Actually, anyone else want to answer this one?  It's pretty common knowledge.

I am familiar with the theology.

I admire your strength of conviction and beliefs and willingness to put them out there.

Dylan,

What style of music do you normally do?  My songs are country-esque.  I just have never been able to write a really good fast rock n' roll song.  Unless you count the one that a friend of mine and I wrote when we were drunk on rum balls.  That was a classic!  I have one slow rock song, but the rest are countrified.  I would love to hear some of my songs and how they sound.  I can make a tape and send it to Jeremy (I still have the address of the station) and he can give it to you.  It won't be for a while, but I will do it eventually.  I'm swamped right now and with summer coming up, it's only going to get worse.  Thanks for the offer!

We could do a FFR CD.  That would be awesome.

Trish,

No rush.  I play all styles.  My stuff leans towards an Eagles meets the doors with a side order of jazz and blues.

I did a song with a surf rock sound that jeremy plays called "My Baby Waits".  My Group name is Late Night Drive.  Its one of the sounds I like.  Give it a spin.

A country, alt/country or country rock feel would not be a problem.  It would be fun to play with another writer's material.
