WEATHERBUG SUCKS!

The forcasting of the weather is an absolute racket! ALL WEEK Weather Bug forcasted Sunny on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, highs in the low 70s. It is now 54 degrees and thunderstorming. It is now projecting a high of 62 with thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday. What a racket.

I know what you mean JD, every inaccurate weather forecast just leads me to contemplate going back to beat up my high school guidance counsellor.  Not too many other professions where you only need to be accurate 30% of the time and excel, except for a hall of fame baseball player.

And these weathermen are high tech failures

Would this be a bad time to mention that I'm a Meteorologist?

No, I'm not kidding.  I actually got my Bachelors and Masters degrees in Met.  I am no longer in the field now (I'm now a software tester), but I keep up with it nonetheless.  We weather-people get a bad rap, there's much more involved than people realize.  I've developed a thick skin about it though, so I won't launch into a diatribe about all the factors involved in a forecast, etc.

Ah, you're right, they do get a bad wrap, I think the problem is kind of self-created though, because they got all this new fancy equipment "Fox Six News, with the new Super-Doppler, ACME Sure-Fire Weather Predictor & Radar!" and they still are only right half the time.

The truth is, I was a weather geek as a kid (I used to turn on the radar on cable and try to "forecast" upcoming storms and stuff, imagining I was a weatherman.  I still remember I wanted to be a local weatherman named Joe Witty, the guy was like my hero when I was 8 or 9).

Maybe YOU can answer a question for me though.  WHAT THE HELLS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PARTLY SUNNY AND PARTLY CLOUDY!!!

It always drives me MAD when they say "Saturday will be partly sunny with a chance of shower, Sunday should be nice but partly cloudy".

Another thing that always makes me chuckle is the "50% chance of rain on Tuesday".  MAN, TALK ABOUT COVERING YOUR BASES.  It MIGHT rain, then again, it MIGHT NOT.  Hmmm, thanks for your help Mr. Weatherguy

aw man- didn't mean to to step on anyone's feet there mursc, but doggone it- ALL WEEK it said this weekend "sunny and 70". it is right now 42 and cloudy WHAT THE HECK!?!??! If the 7 day forcast is impossible to give, then the weather folks should give it up!

On the upside of this, I was to go in for a 1/2 day overtime today. work 7-11, be out in PLENTY of time to get some brews and rays. Because it was CRAPPY out, I was more than happy to stay the whole shift! $$ $$$!

I think "Partly Cloudy" is used the most for night time forecasts. It would sound kind of funny if the forcast for tonight was "Partly Sunny". lol

I use Firefox for my browser. It has a weather plugin so I have the conditions, temp, and a pop-up forecast in the lower right corner of my browser all the time. It's no better than Weatherbug though as it can only provide the data that the humans feed it.

My other one was a real face too . . . my dog's face on my son's body.

With all the talk about "this avatar kind of looks like me", I thought I'd see if I could start a new trend . . . who's next?

I'd put my real picture on there, but I prefer the avatar.  Plus I think my picture is too big and I'm not computer savvy enough to shrink it down.  You've all seen what I look like, I think, and that's good enough for me.

Oh, and we're not allowed to use weatherbug at work.  Our IT guy says that it puts viruses on our computers, so we're not allowed to use it at all.  I fear the IT guy, so I listen like a good girl.

I'm a Weatherbug user, and I used it last week to check on weekend conditions for Burlington, WI (my daughter and I were camping).  On Wednesday the long range forecast said 50's/60's with a 50% chance of rain on Saturday.  The day turned out pretty darn nice, no rain.

Sorry JD, but I gotta disagree.  Weatherbug was pretty darn acurrate.

Trish, Weatherbug has alink on their site to answer all the fears of IT people.  It's a pretty secure site.

Even more off topic . . .

I've also heard that that the Weatherbug is spyware and tracks what you do and where you go on the net. I don't know if it's true or just "IT guy paranoia" but I've heard that as well. Now that I look at their site again, they clearly state that they do not have a tracking system. I would think that running an antispyware program would show it as spyware if it really is. If they have advertising in their system, then that's probably were they get their revenue to provide the service.

By the way, if you have not heard, Microsoft has a pretty decent free antispyware tool now at:
http://microsoft.com/spyware
It only supports 2000 and XP. That's a story by itself as MS bought this program from another company and it used to support '98. Microsoft disabled the '98 support in it after they bought it since they are no longer supporting '98 themselves.

Anyway, the nice thing about the Microsoft antispyware is that it is "memory resident" meaning it will watch for spyware in real time like an antivirus program. Rather than only removing the spyware that gets on your system when you think to run it, this one will help keep the spyware from getting on your system in the first place. Using the Firefox browser will help too as it does not have the ActiveX scripting running which is how most spyware gets on your system.

So, if you:
1. Put your machine behind a firewall
2. Run a good antivirus program
3. Run antispyware programs
4. Switch from IE to Firefox
5. Don't open email attachments
You should be able to use Windows fairly safely.

I empathize with you JD. Usually if the 10-day is predicting rain, I can count on a sunny day by the time that forecast roll around to current day. Whereas the forecast for my trip this Friday to Busch Gardens Williamsburg has been predicted as sunny and 78 degrees all this past week. Now, four days to the day and it's chnaged to 76 degrees and chance of showers. At least that can keep crowds down...

Dovetails- sorry for another weather complaint. Our HR person has a weatherman for a husband, so she gets to hear us all the time. Good pic! The only thing it's missing is Freeze-Frame on the screen behind you!

I just got the new American Hi-Fi CD for Mother's Day (bought by me for me, but that's a WHOLE 'nother story) and posted a reply and was listening to it for the first time and their is a song about a weather guy!  Talk about freaky.  It's called Highs and Lows and it is awesome!  Thought about you , Mrsclub!  I would dedicate it to ya, but it's not on here yet.

I used to know a meterologist, but she said she didn't make enough at it to make it her career.  Last I knew she was in customer service.

I'm kind of a weather geek myself.  I don't think I do too bad.  I've heard that WeatherBug puts adware (not spyware) on your computer, but most of the people I know who've downloaded WeatherBug also download screensavers from the internet, talk about being ad-ed to death!  Personally, I use Desktop Weather from the Weather Channel (weather.com), and I love it!

You know how to solve the problem JD?  Move down here to Sunny Southern California.  We were a little wet this year but living in the Palm Springs area is sunny every day.  I work from home, and had lunch by the pool in my trunks and enjoyed another cloudless sky with gentle breezes wafting through my princess palm trees.  I think today was 80 degrees.  I didn't last long though becasue I got cold.  105 is my ideal temperature and I even continue playing golf through the summer.  Will admit the day it got to 131, I didn't finish the 18 holes.

I could do 105 in So. Cal., but not in Indiana.  I think we get as much humidity here as Florida, but I prefer the summer to the cold winter!!!
