We're getting all packed and ready to go up to Northern Indiana for our nephew's wedding. It looks like we'll be driving through storms. Bummer. But at least I won't be working.
My wife just called to let me know that the final test results from her coworker showed she had swine flu. She was very over weight and had diabetes . . . I don't know if that had any thing to do with how she was unable to fight it off. Her funeral is tomorrow morning.

Apparently people who have any sort of additional health issue, particularly breathing problems, are far more likely to die from swine flu. While diabetes doesn't impact one's breathing, it does impact one's ability to recover from any other injury, illness, or infection.

That which does not kill me postpones the inevitable.
It has hit the state news here now. "56 year old woman with heart condition dies of Swine Flu"
Her sister (who is also a nurse in the hospital where she was) said that they ran heart tests on her and her heart tested fine. She has no idea where the "heart condition" came in at.
It reminds me of when my mom died. Her listed cause of death was heart failure. The last three weeks she was alive, her heart pumped at a pretty consistent rate of around 160 bpm to try to keep things working. If her heart was at all weak, it could not have kept working that hard as long as it did. Yes, her heart finally gave out, but the cancer is what caused it, not heart disease.
I think they use heart failure or condition as cod on a very regular basis -- for lack of really having an answer. heart stops working, you die...

... And as I keep thinking about this poor woman, I wonder, did they not test for swine flu when she was admitted? I think that most everyday people don't think about the swine flu these days, but I would think that doctors would still be on high alert ...
woulda, coulda, shoulda... but it's too late now.
and also, being that she had the swine flu, what about your wife and co-workers? what precautionary measures need to be taken?
