Frank DeFord once said most grown men's allegiance to their sports teams are formed when they are little boys. If they could pick their wives around the same age, there would be no divorce in this country.
So, ladies and gentlemen...do you agree with this and what teams did you bond with. If you are Bear fans, I can only attribute that to a misguided youth.
Mine are:
Packers
Brewers
Bucks
Admirals (minor league hockey)
Wisconsin Badgers
Marquette (whatever they are calling themselves these days)
Pacers and Colts. I was a Steeler fan until the Colts came to town. When I was in Little League I played on the Pirates, so I became a Pirate fan. But baseball kind of lost me with all the BS in the 90's. However, our AAA Indians are now affiliated with the Pirates so who knows, I might get back into it. Indiana State (Alma Mater) and Purdue are my college teams of choice. Soccer, my team is the Twisters! (my daughters team).
Let's see. Loyalty to the Phillies, Flyers, Sixers and Eagles. Also some loyalty to the Yankees. I love to hate the Atlanta Braves, NY Mets, NY Rangers, NJ Devils, NY Giants and the Dallas Cowboys. As for the boys, I guess I currently have no loyalty to anyone.

Any big surprise that I'm a dye-in-the-wool CHICAGO fan? Thought not.
But here is a list anyways. I must add that I'm with Ray on baseball. I gave my YOUTH to the Cubs! I cried in '84, got sceptical in '89, and then the strike. That did it for me, I switched to hockey.
SO! - In order of intensity:
Blackhawks
Bears (You Packers can take your Super Bowls and put 'em in your, LAM-BO!)
Colorado Avalanche (Once the Hawks are out of it, which is usually quick)
One of my fondest childhood memories is watching those lovable loser Cubs play their day games during my summer breaks.
It was so neat that they played all their home games during the day. I never cared if they won or lost, it was just fun to watch them play. That was probably the last time that I could watch a game just for the total joy of watching a game, without taking a "side" so to speak. I loved that they played on what is probably still the coolest FIELD in baseball. The Ivy, The brick wall behind the hitters (before everything was covered up with advertising).
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, good times.
They lost me when they started winning, and when they added those darn lights.
We must have been posting simutaneously because I was most definitely referring to Wef Tur. Like I ever insult anyone else. I'll be more clear next time.
You are definitely not a yuppie. Especially since you aren't a north side or as the say in WI - FIB!!
YUPPIE! Why..... YOU..... frakle, miz, peepin', @#^8....D'OOOOH! OOOO! I'm so MIFFED! I'll have you know that my loyalty to the Cubs was handed to me by my father. I was a Bleacher Bum when they really WERE bums! As a kid, my friends and I would ride the Addision St. bus from the end of the line to Wrigley for "Day of Game" tickets, no matter where they were!
I know who Joe Pepitone, Larry Bittner, Milt Papas, and Jose Cardinal are! I suffered through Steve Ontiveros, Woody Fryman, and Ray Burris! I didn't want Harry Carey (at first), Jack Brickhouse is still the voice of the Cubs to me! HEY! HEY!
It was the corporate foolishness (Tribune Corp.) that led to my souring on baseball. I broke away when the cold reality hit me that they would never put a good TEAM on the field as long as they could sell the PARK. I swithched to the B-Hawks because of the tradition, and then they tore down the Chicago Stadium! I tell 'ya, say what you want, but being a Chicago fan HURTS! But I'm not quitting!
WFTR, I feel your pain. The Brewers havent had a winning season since 1992. The Bucks are in the lottery again. (At least they got the first pick!)
The beautiful thing about sports is that:
a) there is always next year
b) things go in cycles
c) there is nothing as much fun as watching a heated rivalry, ie, Packers-Bears, Yankees-Redsox, Star v WFTR.
d) It is a great way for a dad (or mom) to bond with his or her kids. Even when my dad and I didnt have alot to talk about (ahhh, the teen age years) we always had football. His love of the game drew me in and I even wound up playing for 12 years.
Star, as you can see...the thread is back on course.
Hey, Dylan! I don't think this will take us off track, Thanksgiving Day. As I remember it, the game on that day was always some classic rivalry. Something sure to keep your interest even if it wasn't your team. What the heck happened to that? I miss Bears vs. Lions or Cowboys vs. Redskins. Am I just remembering what I wish to remember?
No...youre still sharp as a tack. It used to be the Packers and the Lions for awhile too. But I believe traditionally, the Lions and the Cowboys are awarded the Thanksgiving day games, but their opponents havent been rivals as of late. Good observation.
Here's a thought. With all the political broo-ha-ha going on right now, a return to grass-roots input has had a resurgance. Bombarding Senators and Reps. has caused some movement. Do you think we need to put out the call and start flooding the phones and email of sports owners? We want TEAM sports again! We want healthy rivalries! We want REASONABLE TICKET PRICES!
(The Packers being shoved into Lake Michigan would be nice, too, but we'll work on that later)
WFTR, a nice Christian man wishing the untimely demise of 53 players and 20 coaches?
You know what might be cool, is that it sounds like alot of us are from the Wisconsin/Illinois area. Come Packer/Bear week we should all hook up to watch the game.
All would be welcome...especially if you cheer for the Green and Gold.
D- I hope we are pals. But I'm just trying to mix it up a bit. Ya know throw the thread back off track. In case you didn't notice I like things to go my way.
You know how I mentioned that bar I used to hit in Milwaukee? I'm so loyal that I walked in with a Bears jacket AND a t-shirt that read "FIB and proud!"
The gathering would be cool, but it's the Blue and Orange for me!
