Getting to know me

Someone just posted asking me about my new chair as well as what it's like to live life as someone with a disability. I'm more than happy to answer any questions anyone might have so please post them here. To get you started, I will be 32 this month and was born with cerebral palsy. In my case, my legs are the most severely affected, hence the need for the wheelchair. It's a pain to break in a new chair, as it's rather like, as Ray said, breaking in a new pair of shoes.

That someone is who we call Weftur.  He's an interesting fellow to say the least.

Where are you from?

Do you have a job?  What do you do to pass the time?

I'm originally from Seattle, but I've lived in Minnesota since 1991. I moved here in 1991 to attend Courage Center which is a rehab facility where people with congenital birth defects, spinal cord injuries oe anything else can gain the skills they need to live on their own. I don't work, but I spend a lot of time reading, listening to FFR. writing, surfing the internet, etc/ I also travel quite a bit,

Sorry for the mix up, MN Mel.  I had logged myself out cleaning up cookies and didn't catch it before that other post.

We just had a sermon at church yesterday challenging us to not be lazy spiritually over the summer and one of the suggestions was to reach out to someone who comes at life differently than you.  So your in my sights!  I'm curious about your new chair, what are some of the things that make one good/bad, comfortable/uncomfortable?  And can you pop a wheely?

Yes, WFR, I can pop a wheelie, LOL, As to the first part of your question, getting a new motorized chair is just like a non-disabled person getting a new car in a lot of ways except that as well as making sure that the vehicle itself works, I also have to make sure it fits me just right, and that can be a pain in the ass. It always hurts when i get a new chair because what happens is that your body gets used to sitting one way from when you had the old one, and now it has to get used to a whole new seating system. And right now feels as though my back is in a vice griip. OW!

My wife and I have a very good friend with MS and she mentioned the same situation with getting a new cane.  I thought, "Come on.  A cane is a cane, right?"  Wrong!  She has her everyday cane, her dress cane, her heavy duty cane, I was amazed!
