At least 7 people are dead and at least 12 injured in a shooting at Ft. Hood near Killeen, TX. There are 3 gunmen... one in custody, one has been surrounded, and another opened fire a few minutes ago. Seems as though they were firing into a graduation ceremony.
What the heck is wrong with these people?

It is horrible. Not sure if it is 2 or 3 shooters at this point. There are at least 3 scenes where shooters opened fire. Most of the victims were at a Soldier's Resouce Center... kind of a processing center of sorts, another was at a theater, third location wasn't really identified. Gov. Hutchison is on the news indicating that she was told that it is possibly as many as 30 people wounded.

Indiscrimanent murder is something I will never understand. How can anyone think it is a good idea to just go shoot up a bunch of people? What does that solve? Do these people really think they are advancing some sort of political or social agenda by doing this? What is the point?
In this case, it is not going to disband the 1st Cavalry Division. It is not going to stop the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan. All it is going to do is destroy lives and cause grief and pain for innocent people.

WOW... watching some further coverage of this event.
Apparently the primary shooter was Army Major Nidal Hasan... a psychiatrist. He has been shot but is not dead. According to family and others who know him, he has been trying to get out of being deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan as he believes Muslims (which he is) should not be fighting other Muslims. He apparently went as far as to hire some lawyers to even attempt to secure his discharge from the Army if necessary. It is also reported that Maj. Hasan was brought to the attention of military authorities several months ago for his commentary to various people and some of his internet posts.
If that is the case, how much more unnecessary could this possibly be? One of his cousins was interviewed and indicated that the family was not aware that he had received deployment orders, which according to military sources he had.
According to the Army spokesman he was the only shooter. The two other people initially taken into custody were questioned and released. Apparently there are 12 dead and 31 injured.
Speaking just for myself, I can completely understand and respect his moral and religious objections to the wars. I totally agree that he should not be deployed, and should have exercised the legal means at his disposal to terminate his military career on those grounds. I cannot understand or accept his decision to kill 12 people and injure 31 others because he does not wish to be deployed. That is not a reasonable or rational answer to his situation. Bottom line, if nothing else he could have deserted. There was no reason for those people to have to die or get hurt at that place on this day. The uniform code of military justice allows for the death penalty. I sincerely hope in this case that the military courts decide to exercise that option. The military prison at Ft. Leavenworth is too good for this murderous a-hole.
