Not a great start to 2010

I just got a phone call while playing football against Web that my grandma died suddenly today.

We don't know what happened yet, I'm thinking some kind of a heart-attack or something.

She was in her 80's and had a really bad run of health issues the last ten years.  Most recently having her leg broken twice in two months.

It's weird, I'm not incredibly sad because I really believe she lived a good, long life and has gotten her reward now.  No more pain.

Yet I can't stop thinking about her and all the time I spent with her when I was a kid.  She was my Mom & Dad's go-to babysitter so I spent a TON of time there.

One of my favorite memories (besides her home made deep fried chicken and the bottomless cookie jar she seemed to have) is how when I was a kid she'd try to "surprise" me by making me a malt.

We'd be watching a movie or tv show, and at some point she'd get up to go to the kitchen.  I'd hear the glasses come out, the malt powder jar hit the counter, the blender running (which sounded like a Mack truck rolling through the kitchen).

Then when all the sound stopped she'd come out of the kitchen with two malts in her hands and say "I have a surprise for you".

It was never a surprise.  smile.gif  But it was always awesome.

Rest in peace Grandma.  I love you!

Thanks guys.

I'm sure the actual funeral will be hard, but only from a selfish standpoint (what I'm losing). The reality is she lived a long life and is much better off now.

Getting old sure sucks though don't it?

I'd love to dial back the clock 20 years to the day when everyone I loved was alive and happy. Everything was so different then.

It's good that you have such great memories of her and that you can celebrate her life more than mourning her death.

How beautiful, Riggs, that you call upon the most special memories of her to find peace in her passing and celebrate her life...even if at moments it is sad or bitter-sweet. One of my favorite quotes is "a single day of life is worth more than all the treasures of the universe."

It sounds like you have many life treasures shared between you and your grandma. Blessings and prayers for you and yours.

Thanks Heather.

And again, I'm sorry to hear about Boris. JD has never struck me as much of a pet person but he seemed to love those playful little ferrets of yours. Boris must have been something special. smile.gif
