I was shocked how inexpensive it was considering the cost of any computer. If your computer ever dies Dylan, look into it. I gave Emily my old computer, she is in heaven!

I've only had an ancient hand-me-down that I gave up on. My frustration level skyrocketed as it continually froze up. I so wish I could afford a new one. But I am happy to have my blackberry so I at least have something else when I am lazy- lol

I've had my laptop for almost 2 years now, and I don't know how I got on without it. And I got Brian an old used laptop for Christmas. (It's giving me fits though, I need to buy a new battery for it, Adobe Reader won't install [keeps saying virtual memory is too low], and I can't get it hooked up to our home network.) And of course, after Christmas, I saw a Netbook on Craigslist for $200, which is exactly what I wanted to get him at exactly the right price. Dammit. Darnit.

MZ, go to Control Panel, System, Advanced Tab, Performance Settings, Advanced Tab, Virtual Memory Change, and see what your page file size setting is.  Normally, you can set your page file size to be 1.5 times the amount of physical RAM you have on your PC.  If you can increase this settign, it will give you more virtual memory.

1.5x, I'll remember that. I already went in and increased it a bit, then switched it to system managed, and still got the same error. I'll try upping it more tonight.

The network thing is what's really getting me frustrated. Since it doesn't have built in wireless, I got him a Linksys card, which overrides the Windows Network Wizard. I haven't figured out how to switch it yet. Luckily, he's online, just not on the home network, so it's not a big deal, I just want it to work!

He can get online, but just can't see your other computers?

Ok, good, you know what I'm talking about.  I've never set it to system-managed size, I've always set it to custom.  Make sure you set your initial and max sizes both to 1.5 times.  The bottom part of that Virtual Memory window should show you minimum and recommended sizes - the recomended size should reflect the 1.5 times setting.  I've never tried going over the recomended value, so I'm not sure what would happen, or if you are already at that point now.  You may just have to get more RAM.  I recently got more for my home pc from crucial.com.  They have a neat tool that will analyze your PC and tell you exactly what kind of RAM and what sizes of RAM you can get to ensure compatability with your system.

And no, I don't work for them!  :)  I just found them to be helpful and inexpensive.

As for the network issue, you're on your own there.  I still use dial-up and have 2 7-yr-old PCs at home, so there is no netowrking going on in my house!

Yep Web, that's it exactly. And my other computer can't see his. I've set my files to be viewable by all computers on my home network, I think the problem is with his computer. Also, my computer is Vista (which actually seems to be doing it right) and his is XP, but I don't think that should be a problem. I think it's with the wireless adapter.

I do not have a laptop either. I would like one, but don't need it. Kind of like a new, pretty, HD tv. I would like one, but don't need it. Nor can I afford either one.

No, Vista to XP shouldn't be a problem.

Hmm, that is strange if you have sharing turned on the other machines but can't see them.

If you go into Windows Explorer then "My Network Places" then "Entire Network" then "Microsoft Windows Network", you don't see your workgroups or anything?

I'm not in front of it right now, so I can't double check. But as far as I remember, I can't see a workgroup or anything. It doesn't seem to matter if I try setting the network up from his computer or from mine, they just don't seem to be talking to each other. When I look it up, it says that the Linksys adapter is overriding Windows Zero something-or-other, and I need to change it to let the Windows Zero thing control the network settings, but the instructions I get tell me to go to a tab under Properties that isn't there.

I don't have a laptop either.

My daughter bought a new one in November right after Windows 7 was released.  NICE!!  I've played around with her's once in a while.  When my desktop dies, I'll probably go to a laptop.
