Some people use blinker instead of turn signal.

My parents always said "Blinker", though I know "turn signal" is probably closer to technically correct.  One day in the late 80's, my friend & I were driving with someone, and he got mad at the driver, who didn't use their turn signal, and he yelled out the window (in a "hell-oooo!" type of manner)  "Di-rectional indicator?!"  We found it hilarious.

Me too.  I mean, where on earth are you people getting an "R" from?  I don't see an "R."

Actually, my motivation for trying to get into bars when I was underage had very little to do with drinking, and usually very much to do with the band that was playing.

Speaking of "proper terms" while driving, it reminds me of a story that I love to share.

Me and my friend Jessica were going on a trip to the Renaissance Faire in Bristol, Wisconsin.  We got lost, so we decided to pull into a gas station for directions.  She was driving, and as she pulled into the gas station, was headed directly for a median that separated the exit.  I pointed and said, "Median," but she ran right over it.

I said, "I said 'Median.""

She replied, "Well if you would've said, 'Thingy!'"

Just for the record we call them 'indicators' in the UK... that is all. smile

That makes totals sense, actually.  But this boy was a Long Island boy all the way!  Part of what made it so amusing was the accent that went along with it.

This one popped up in my head the other day.

Most people say, "I'll call you."

But I have friends that live up north that say, "I'll phone you."

"Phone" makes total sense - probably more than "call."
Like when I talk to people in England, they say "mobile phone" instead of "cell phone", and I think that makes more sense too.

So we were watching a show last night, and one of the characters mentioned something being in his wheelhouse. I was like, "Ahhh! It's Dylan's saying!" My husband was surprised I hadn't heard of it until recently. But now that I've heard it, I am definitely keeping an ear out for it!

LS, I still chuckle at your response... 'but there is no wheel or house involved, it makes no sense.' biggrin

You were absolutely correct. smile

I still don't get it, but I was excited to hear someone else saying it.
