RE: TGIF HUMOR

I prefer background vocals.  I like the challenge of Harmony.  Or Duets.  Have not sung in Public though for years so it is probably too late for me

That's one thing we could never figure out back when some friends and I tried to make bands in college- singing harmony! We had to just thrash and do some terrible stuff, not that we just wanted to do that, but we had no choice- we couldn't figure out who should be singing where vocal wise to have it sound good.

How does that work? If there are 8 notes in an octave for any key, is the range limited to singing somewhere within that 8 note area to get good harmonies?

I was once in a band that lasted for 1 gig at the Unicorn here in town. It was 7 bass players, we called it Mute Lungs. That was a lot of fun!

Music theory...

Chord theory is the basis for harmony.

You are right JD, there are 8 notes per key.  Every chord has a signature sound.  The spacing of where each note falls in the sequence of the key determines the sound of the chord.

Example: a "C" chord is comprised of "c", the root note, the next note is "E", the 3rd note in the key and "G", the 5th note in the key. (The 1-3-5 chord).  The Key of C has no sharps or flats.

So for vocal harmonies, the different voices can assume different  points in the scale to harmonize.

There is also the ability to harmonize when two voices are singing the same note, but one or two octaves apart.

Since no two voices are alike, two people could also be singing the same note, but the timbre of their voices compliment each other.

hope that helps

Ultimo,
I would ask you are you more comfortable learning at your own pace or would you like more structure?
Do you want to learn the guitar on a superficial level or take the approach to really play and understand what you are playing?

Q1. I am more cormfortable learning at my own pace but am willing to put the time and effort in.

Q2. Im not sure on this question, I do want to learn to play with a level of understanding but im not sure I will be able to but I guess I will just have to wait and see on that one.

Usually when I get into something, I want to know how and why it works the way it does. I started learning to play the bass as an exception to that. I have no desire to ever be in a real band or anything like that, I just wanted to have fun and make some noise that sounds sorta-ok.

Someday I may get interested in learning enough chord theory etc to be able to improvise and embellish bass lines at will but that desire is not there yet. Right now I'm happy to just be able to play along with a few songs and in our church praise team.

I am having to learn to read more music than I planned. I can play the root notes and root/fifth combinations off the guitar chord notations, but I struggle keeping up when I don't read muisc well enough to tell where the keyboardist is at. I'm a linear kind of guy . . . start at the beginning and go to the end. I'm qickly learning that most music is not written that way. All the codas, repeats, etc has been a challenge for me to keep up with. But, I'm learning and it's a lot of fun!

I got started using the E-media software. My wife has a guitar and we have both the bass and guitar software courses. I think they are great. If you are wanting to learn the deeper musical theory, then these are not for you. If you want to get going and have some fun learning on your own, they are super. The thing I like about these software courses is that they get you playing songs rather quickly which is what makes it fun and helps you want to keep going.

I don't know what kind of availability you have there Ultimo, but here's one supplier's list of Emedia software Link
