Summerfest

This doesn't look nearly as impressive in photo as it does in person, but here's a view of ALL of Summerfest from the 32'nd floor of the US Bank building in downtown Milwaukee.

How long did you have to wait to get a sunny day.

JD,

Yep, the photo was taken about 7:15 PM tonight.

I saw how dead it was yesterday. To be honest, the entire run has seemed pretty light. I mean, traffic has been no problem, there doesn't seem to be too many people walking around.

I wonder if their numbers are gonna be way down this year.

Is this the first year without Bo Black?

I think its the 2nd year without her, if I recall. I think its dead too because a lot of the kids are complaining that there are no real "good" bands there that the kiddies like- its all geared for the 30-45 crowd- less people but with more money than 100 little tommy "green day" fan.

what kinda sucks about that tho is that these kids then will go to see someone like steve winwood and just make a lot of noise, not really listen. makes the real fans ticked off.

Nice shot. How many stages do they have? I think I see two. What's the blue building at the top of the picture? Do they do anything with the Island? Inquizitive minds want to know.

Actually Ray,

There's five or six stages I believe, each a different size.

The big building near the top is the Marcus Ampitheather where the main acts play.

I don't think they do anything with the island other than some golfing game, but I'm not sure.

Ray there are 10 main stages, including the marcus ampitheater, but not including the little side stages by the picnic tables. Anything with a blue top would be a stage. If you scroll to the far end of the pic, the big blue structure is the marcus ampitheater at the south end of the grounds.

There are all sorts of plans for the island, but it is not currently in heavy use. Some storage trucks etc sometimes park out there.

riggs your right- there is a seperate little floating island for the golfing game (a hole in 1 or closest to the pin wins a car), but I think the boats they use to retrieve golf-balls in the water

anchor on the big island.

They should make the island the main food area or something.

Hey, I'm sure everyone knows, but if you click on the picture it will get much larger, so you can see better details.

Doesn't Summerfest attract the big names anymore.  When I worked at Park East--early 80's we had the Pointer Sisters, Hall and Oates, Corey Hart, Belinda Carlilse, Bangles.  I thought those were pretty big names at the time.  Maybe I was wrong.  I always got free backstage passes and tix working at the hotel they or the road crew was staying at.

We really only get big names in Country these days, and even those are just the standby's.

I think Tim McGraw plays here almost every summerfest.

But mostly it's has-been acts. if you're an 80's fan you can really relive a lot of the glory days at Summerfest.

...which makes me happy to an extent. But when they are booking acts like Hall and Oates 5 yrs in a row, its never as fun as the first year or two- it becomes a "same old same old" vibe then, and it really reduces these bands from their legendary status to like a working band status. David Lee Roth has now played 2 yrs in a row- heck I think this is about the 3rd straight year each for Tom Petty & Mellencamp at the ampitheater. These are names with drawing power, but it does have a lot of people finally peaved off this year, calling it "Bummer Fest".

I imagine if you're a big Mellencamp fan you'd LOVE it though.

I know if Meat Loaf played there every year I'd actually attend every year.

So far, Tim McGraw & LeAnn Rimes have been the only acts that have moved me to go down there.

oh heck yea if you are a big fan of any of the big names, you got it made! I was fortunate enought to catch steve winwood this year- he played last year but I missed him, and thought that might have been it from ol' Stevie. I was wrong. Not sure I'll go next year if he's back again tho! I guess a lot depends on what is offered on a nightly basis.

The other night I was at Pixies and Wheezer. I had seen Pixies late last year at the Milwaukee theater at the start of their reunion tour. They were on fire. But on Thursday, 9 months into the tour, you could tell that they were wearing out. Not that it was a bad show or that they were just going through the motions, but its one thing to be on the road for a year when you are 22, another thing when you are 42! they seemed tired.

I get to check out late 80's early 90's rockers Living Colour tomorrow night. Haven't seen them perform since '92! It will be interesting to see how well they have held up. I did have a chance to meet Corey Glover, lead singer, in '95 at a solo show he did at the fest. Real nice guy....checkin out the ladies!
