My advice would be....

HEY!

We have all come to certain truths in our lives that only experience through time can teach a person. The things that "the old folks" used to tell us that didn't ring true or even seem relevant, but turned out to be universal truisms. Please refrain from the old wives tales, tired phrases etc "don't eat the yellow snow (although don't...) but what has life taught you; what has made you wise??

For me, I've had to discover that quality of life is not dependent upon more income or money than one is making right in the here and now. I would have NEVER have believed I would ever say that 5 yrs ago. But I saw, still see so many people, striving to do more, earn more, be more than who they are. They don't live today. So long as the sun is in the sky, I have food, shelter, clothing, its a good day. I can take care of the rest. All we have is the here and now. The freedom in letting go and accepting that; to step out of the rat race, to "follow your bliss" as Joseph Campbell put it, has been remarkably liberating.

Oh.

And try and have a good day even if you are having a bad day. Don't let the b$stards win.

Communication is essential.  So many fights, rivalries, and disagreements would be obsolete if people just talked to each other.  So many times you think that someone should know what you want or how you feel, and they don't, and you end up getting mad or offended at something.  Sometimes you just have to tell people what you want or how you feel.

Oh I so agree MZ. So much wisdom, so young. I know that I should said something in June about the raise, but I felt like the raise not being in my check was words enough said.

Communication is good. Also not worrying about what other people think. And most important love yourself. take care of your body, mind and spiritual self and all usually goes smoother.

The advice I follow is the advice I got from my mom - wake up every morning and ask yourself if you are happy - and if you're not, change it. It's very empowering in a world where the victim mentality seems to run amok. It's so easy for people to get stuck in a rut and develop learned helplessness...

My wife works in a bank. My most recent "revelation" as been that just because another person "looks" like they are doing very well doesn't mean they are. She keeps reminding me of that fact every time I see a friend with the brand new $35k Dodge extended cab 4x4. At least it helps me deal with that fact that our "new" vehicle is 11 years old - lol

Then of course there's
"Don't sweat the petty things" and
"Don't pet the sweaty things"

My advice is pretty much the same as all of yours.  My parents struggled to raise my brothers and I, working 2-3 jobs at a time, and we've never been well off, but the love we all have and closeness we have is worth more than anything in the world.  I have friends who are much richer and can't stand their families. It's really heartbreaking.

Life is what you make of it.

I'm grateful every day I wake up and I'm still here.

(WFTR Rant!  WFTR Rant!)

The greatest truth I have learned?  There is a God, He is a real being, and He is bigger than anything going on in the world.  He has a plan for my life, and when I follow it there is no problem I can't survive, and no ceiling on the joy that can be experienced.  Every part of your life falls into place when you let Him have it.

Amen.

Oh, and according to the song playing right now . . .

"Don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys!"

It seems that my momma was one-for-two on that one.
(my brother is the cowboy ... really, it's not me!)

i have learned that what comes around goes around.

i have learned "that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger is not always true, sometimes it just breaks us"

i have learned that if you have to make hard choices, always make the ones that allow you to look in the mirror with no shame.

i have learned that if you truly wish and pray for something hard enough, it just might happen. So don't waste your wishes and prayers on something vengeful, petty, or small.

I have learned that at times I might not have much, but I have my honesty, which leads to integrity. Nothing is more powerful than the truth!

JD-
You've gotten so profound today.  It reminds me of the movie Jerry Maguire where he eats some bad pizza and writes a mission statement.  But I like the profound JD.  Where did he come from??

Win the big lottery early in your life and work for yourself. Do what you want. Come and go as you please. Don't work for the man.

What a great thread for today, it is inspiring me.  JD you are so correct.  The money is one of the major disagreements I am having with myself and my wife.  I used to think that I wanted to live the life of a Soap Opera Millionaire, that having millions would take away all my problems.  I am rapidly learning that with every dollar earned is another problem presented.  It just does not stop.  I heard a saying once that No Success Can Compensate for Failure in the Home--in fact I think it was on a plaque on my friends wall at home.

I thank everyone for your prayers, believe me I need them.

I also recall the saying from Wizard of Oz.  It is not how much you love, but how you are loved by others.  I interperate that to mean that monetary success mean nothing if you are not loved.

I'll step away from the podium now, I am still recovering from the knock down drag out my wife and I had.  Interestingly enough what stopped the fight for now was my seven year old crying and asking me if I was going to live somewhere else and divorce mommy.  I didn't know she even knew what the word divorce meant.

I would have never have belived that 3 yrs ago CP. I so believed more $= less problems + more status. But you have got to earn that money, at the expense of the time it takes, and takes away from energy better directed at making sure the loved ones are ok on the inside, too.

3 yrs ago I was in an office making good money. But I was in that office until 10 pm pretty much 5 or 6 days a week. I love going to summerfest, and they had the shuttle pass by my window filled with people gettin ready to have a good time with their friends, to really live life that night. I couldn't go that year. I "HAD" to get my project done. It was then that I realized I was living my life wrong.

Kids do the darndest things.  That just tugs at my heart strings!  Yes, you money does contribute to a lot of problems.  Looking back now, if we didn't have all of the financial responsibilities we did - my ex and I probably would have survived.  But we had to have the house, motorcycle, truck, new furniture, etc.  We didn't need it!  Sometimes being poor and in love is the best way to go but you won't know that till you get there.  There, Sparky, is some of my relationship story.  Happy?

You know what CP?  That is what ended one of the last arguements my wife and I had!  Our 13 year old asked us with the concerned angst that only a teenager can produce if we were splitting up.  We both stopped with blank stares and said, "What?  No!  Not at all!"  We then calmly laid out for her what the disagreement was over, and when we said it with cool heads, we realized how stupid it was.

Kids are magic, ain't they?  And don't be surprised by what they understand.  They are bombarded by reality everyday from many sources.  Tons of info and not a clue what to do with it.  That's where we step in and say, "My advice would be...."

JD, I just came to that realization last week.  As many here know, I work two jobs, but the second job doesn't bring in much money.  But, we are way behind on our bills because my husband was unemployed for a while, so I thought every little bit would help.  But, I'm dealing with some depression (and I'm a pretty happy person), I'm tired all the time, and I've been getting sick more than usual.  I realized that I'm too young to feel this old, that the extra money just isn't worth it.  My last day at my second job is the 22nd.

I have been there 2 mz. Its cold comfort, but sometimes the only thing that got me through the rough spots was the thought that, well, 5 yrs from now all these problems will be long gone, I will have moved on to a whole new set of problems by then.....

I am sorry about the depression. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

Another thing I tried to do was to isolate a specific time of day for me to just review the bills, feel the anxiety, try and make sense of a plan of attack, and then put it away once the alloted time- 20 mins? was up.

Go outside, feel the sunshine. Have a nice cold drink. Know that when it comes to woes, you've got good & plenty of company.

I've got to make a request for the request this- this song by Blues Traveler "It Won't Mean A Thing IN a 100 yrs." Beatiful song with healing powers!

Follow the mantra from the movie "Meatballs".

It just doesn't matter!  It just doesn't matter!  It just doesn't matter!

What life has taught me , hmm.. lets see, ahem ,  If you are going to hit an ememy don't stop with 1 blow. Hit it again and again and when it falls , kick it into next week. If it tries to get up, kick it again , Never let it get it's footing again !
