So I heard a commercial on the radio this morning on my way to work for Cheeseburger in Paradise. Of course, the song is playing in the background. So, of course, they play the part that goes, "I like mine with lettuce and tomato, Heinz 57 and french fried potatoes, Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer..." then they interrupt the song to say something like, "Come down to Cheeseburger in Paradise," and then continue the song with, "Which way do I steer?"
The way I've always heard it, the song goes, "...and a cold draft beer. Good God Almighty, which way do I steer?" They took the God part out! I'm a sworn atheist, but I really don't understand why you would butcher a song like that for a commercial!
Yes, we all believe that taking God out of everywhere will make life better, will offend no one and might help their bottom line. I know better though. As long as there are tests in school, sickness and poor people, there will always be someone praying! God does hear though!
I heard about an atheistic, dyslexic, insomniac. Stayed up all night pondering the existance of Dog.
And don't get me started on the removal of God! Political correctness has marketers so scared that they avoid any mention of the "G" word as if there was really a law. Public schools suffer from the same affliction.
Don't belittle MZ please, we all have a right to believe what we want. I respect her and pray for her and that is all we can do! She is willing to be exposed to God here, so that makes me happy!
It's sounds mostly like they needed the syllables in order to produce the phrase "Come on down to Cheeseburgers in Paradise". I'm agnostic, so I suppose you could say I don't lean in any direction. I like the line in Sting's song "Men go crazy in congregation, they only get better one by one."
Anyway, on a personal note, I have a some beef of my own with Buffet... we have a restaurant run by some really cool people who stay here during the summer and move to Florida for the winter months. The guy is a natural born parrothead... or was. In tribute to Buffet, for whom I suppose his lifestyle is attributed (he even has a pencil thin mustache) - he named his little roadside cafe Cheesburgers in Paradise. It was fine for a few years, but about 2 years ago a lawyer showed up representing Buffet requiring the guy to change the name because Buffet was going to be opening a chain of restaurants in the name. So, the guy torn down anything Buffet-related, drew a big red X across the framed parrothead shirt he had on display and changed the name to Beef and Buns in Paradise with a sub-quote "Whats' in a Name?" He now boycotts Outback (Buffet is a chairman on the chain's board), Magarittaville frozen foods, Carabbas and everything else monetarily related to the Buffet enterprise.
I go back and forth on the issue - I understand he did it as tribute, but it's also use of the name for the benefit of his business... if I didn't know them so well as really cool people who did it in tribute, I'd be more likely to think kinder thoughts about Buffet. That is, until I saw him talk on a CMT interview... he's a businessman, inside and out. Whatever he preaches in his songs isn't him anymore, IMHO. He seemed like a cold, money-hungry fellow in the interview.
Zim, that's another issue that I don't like to think about. I'd like to sit in my little oblivion and believe that wasn't Jimmy Buffet's work, but the work of agents and lawyers. Liek I've said before, sometimes I don't want to know the story behind the music. But, I'm not a parrothead by any means, but I like a lot of his stuff for the songs and what they stand for.
The one I'm really torn about is David Bowie. I LOVE Bowie, he is my absolute favorite. But, his website charges $65 to get in to really see anything, even pictures. I feel like that's just a rip off and taking advantage of fans. So I'll continue to sit here in my oblivion and believe that he really has nothing to do with it...
