What's you office/desk look like?

Okay so we all know what we do for a living, but I read an article about what your desk says about you in this month's Psychology Today.

I am fortunate enough to have an office with a door! Besides my boss, everyone else sits together in a large open area, with no privacy. I also have a large picture window with a beautiful view of our college's campus. I have pictures of my family all over, both in frames and printed off the computer and posted on my bulletin board. I have a Wizard of Oz calendar on my wall too. I have several cards put up that student's have given me over the years. My favorite knick knack is my "Ashes from problem students" jar. My girlfirend gave it to me for Xmas and it sits prominently on my desk. I have my degrees framed on the walls, my boss said that was mandatory to display all degrees earned! I also have post it notes all over my computer.

I can analyze your desks from what you tell me, at least according to what the magazine says.

I am at an "L" shaped desk, everything within grabbing range is work related, varoius info in some what neat piles.  On my pin board and cabinet front I have pictures of/from my kids, some cartoons, and a picture of Eric Daze (GO HAWKS!).  My favorite toys are between my keyboard and my monitor, and I have one drawer dedicated to secondary toys.

Pick my brain!

Right now, simply put, a mess. The end of the year will do that for you. It doesn't stay this way though.

I have an office with a door too.  I have a clock on the wall, a bookshelf that has resource books on one shelf, supplies on another, a bunch of frames with pictures of my family, and a couple knick-knacks.  I have a couple motivational posters in frames that were supplied when I got here.  I did get to pick which ones I wanted.  I have The Roots of Character, The Essence of Compassion, and The Power of Attitude.  The Power of Attitude is on the floor at the moment because it used to be over my desk, but I replaced it with a bulletin board.  My bulletin board has a printout cutout of Peter Pan on it, a funny quote from Dear Abby, a few notes, my current patient list, a staff calendar, and a few personal notes to me such as cards from my birthday.  My desk itself has a bamboo plant in a vase that was made for me by my sister, a candle, a filing tray, a stress ball, and a picture frame that has the picture of my and my husband from the gardens in it and a monthly calendar in the other side.  Of course, I've got my printer, monitor, phone, keyboard, etc.  My work is usually in neat stacks unless I'm really flustered that day.  Oh, and my organizer/binder is always on my desk in one corner.

OK, Ruby, what's the damage?

So Ruby . . . is that area where you work called "Ruby's Cube"? Hahahaha, get it "Ruby's Cube"? . . . "Rubiks Cube" . . . ah never mind.

I can see you are going to be busy. Here's mine:

In that pile on the far right are three hard drives, a video card, other small parts, and two rolls of shipping tape from shipping off the last server. Next is a computer I'm working on for the church, my Linux desktop computer, collection of empty "Diet Wild Cherry Pepsi" cans, me (in the chair) a couple small empty boxes behind me, and my laptop.

Under the cubbie that you can't see in, there is a dictionery, letter organizer, phone, and caller ID box. Stuck to the bulletin board in the cubbie are a couple sales tax update notices, a picture of my son, a few yellow flippie notes, and some stamps.

When you walk in the front door of the office, you see:

The church pew on the left is a completed project waiting to be picked up by the customer. The puzzle on the desk is another project that I need to make a frame for.

Wow, looking at that picture, I see I need to clean up that pile of junk sitting on the mini fridge . . . doesn't look very good. lol

So, what 'cha think doc . . . am I crazy?

For lack of time, I will just brief you all on the article and then you can access yourself and each other!

Plants- if you have a plant at your desk, it means that you are an established employee and plan to stay that way.

Post it notes on your screen- addiction to post its means that you have a hectic job or life, workers who rely on them often feel overwhelmed!

Clocks- employees who do not pay attention to the time are not as conscientoius as those who mind every minute. Clock lovers are meticulous and hardworking.

Family photos- Some psychologists say that they are status symbols, while others say that it signifies familial closeness. The employee feels guilty about being away from home. If it faces you it is for your benefit, if it faces away that symbolizes it is for the benefit of the bystander.

Candy bowl- beckons for social interaction.

Choice icongraphy- (pix of celebrities) shows your values and aspirations.

The more, the mightier- the more personalized your area, the higher workplace status of its owner. Messy or neat, it shows you are comfortable enough to make it your own.

Identity politics- Openness to new experiences is easy to detect. A wide variety of books, art or toys points to openess.

Spillover effect- conscientiousness is a personality trait that is almost impossible to fake and difficult to change. Simply put, tidy desk= tidy person. No matter how hard messy people try to hide they can never fully hide their true nature! (look in your drawers!)

The empty desk- not only does a barren desk indicate a low company status, it implies lack of dedication. I you have none of the above stuff means that you do not plan on hanging around.

Ok sorry, but I thought it was a great article!

I can see what they mean about the job you plan on staying at.
