Freeze that weight off!

I have decided that I am going back on the Weight Watcher's plan a week from today, August 3rd.  I used to be a part of a weight loss forum, but it had very little action, and even less that helped me.  So, I figure I'm not the only one here who wants to lose weight, and who is better for support than FFR members?  So, use whatever plan you like, and report in.  Weigh ins are on Wednesdays, but you don't have to post your weight, just how much, if any, you lost in the past week.

I always have to splurge first, that's why I always set a date to start.  So, my goal for this week is to enjoy myself and not worry about it.

My goal for next week will be to drink at least 6 glasses of water a day and attempt to follow the weight watchers plan.

Anyone else in?

I could use it, but I have no plan. I guess if I stopped eating junk that would be a first good move. I usually drink enough water during the day.

Anyone have suggestions on a good plan? South Beach, Weight Watchers, some version of Atkins?

I lost 50 lbs on Jenny Craig then went on a plateau.  Now I eat only non fat, low calorie and no sodium.  I have lost a total of 70 pounds now. I eat a lot of vegeis and tofu and really like it. I gained it when I had my back surgury.  I was so active before in playing tennis, running, etc, but the back injury limited my mobility for a couple of years and the weight just piled on.

I now swim one mile every day and I am going to join Pilates.  I am not convinced on the programs like Jenny or Weight Watchers.  These programs only work if you change what is inside you.  It wasn't until I decided for myself that I was going to take the weight off that it really worked.   Cheating was just too easy.  When I made up my mind I just did not want that cake or chips, I just stopped.  It could be infront of me and not tempt me.

Good luck and count on my support.  Losing weight is hard.

I'm with CP. Until you change your mindset. It's all mental with me. I have cut out a lot of junk and tried to stick to healthier stuff. I forced myself to stop. I've dropped about 8 lbs over the last month. I really need to get more active. I need to get on my bike and ride. Now I have to force myself to make the time.
You have to tell yourself you can because if you tell yourself you can't your right.
Set daily goals to meet, today I'm not eating any chips. Make the goals obtainable without being too easy. Then build on them. That's what I'm doing. I've nearly cut out all pop. I drink a lot of iced tea. I eat more chicken, fish, turkey and pork. Turkey burgers are just as good as hamburgers on the grill.
Go for it. I'm pulling for you.

Congrats CP . . . 70 lbs? That's awesome!

It would do me good to lose about 20. Last summer I was fighting Diverticulitis and had pretty much quit eating any more than what was necessary to survive. When you eat then hurt, it really helps you not want to eat. I lost about 15 lbs in two months then had to have surgery where they took out about a foot of my colon. That fixed me but I started eating again and I found most of what I had lost.

I like Dave's idea but my wife won't participate in such activities and she'd probably get a little mad if I worked out with another woman in such a manner.

So, cyber weight loss buddies is an excellent idea!

Webguy-

You're the MacGyver of the group I figure you could build a cyber wife and chase her aound the table. I'm sure if you could make her cook and clean your wife wouldn't mind.

How about for someone like me at the brink of getting out of shape? What is good to maintain current weight- I eat good, could use more exercise but that is hard in summer. I know weight watchers has a chart of points or something? Would you be willing to share with us how that works?

I am currently at a healthy 160. Ideally should be at 145-150. Took a week and a half a few years back of ecoli to drop from 170 to 150. Not the most ideal weight loss plan, but folks were envious!

Man JD I'd love to be 160 again. I just droppedfrom 184 to 176. My goal is about 160. It's going to be slow but sure. I've also tried to cut back on portions. Eat more salad, fruits and veggies.
Did you grill out tonight?

I did ray- NY strips were on sale- had one of those, maybe 10 oz? a piece of garlic bread, and 1/2 of a sliced tomato. I agree on portion control and rarely snack between meals. I just know that with weight watchers, that they assign some sort of point value to foods? Like if you are good and have X points monday-friday, then saturday you can eat or drink whatever. I have seen it work for a person I work with- lost 40 pds, but I am not close enough to this person to ask the specific details of the program.

Exercise and moderation is the key. I have maintained 115-120 for years through both. I eat what I want, just in moderation. If I want ice cream, I eat a couple of bites and the urge to eat the whole box subsides. I am a huge fan of exercise. Denise Austin is my personal hero. As irritating as she is, at 48 or so, she is an inspiration. I also pray a lot to control my eating habits. I have been slacking on my daily routine, I am on board to try to get back to at least 20 minutes a day!

I have to admire "Dr. Laura" for saying it like it is.

I was listening to her one day and a lady called in complaining about her geneitc problems that has made her fat. Dr. Laura asked her "In all the pictures of concentration camps that you've seen, have you ever seen a fat person?".

Her point: if you don't eat, or at least eat less than you burn up each day, you WILL lose weight no matter who your relatives are.

I am pulling for you MZHartz. Its not easy. I came back from El Paso after seeing my Cousin and saw the pic of me coming out of the Army weighing about 170 which was ideally the weight for me. However I came home to the American Cheeseburger and Mccdonalds and gained it back. Plus I stopped exercising.

However after coming back from El Paso in june I started taking these Cortislim weight suppresents and have lost 8 pounds. I want to drop 40 before March so that my Cousin will be Jealous of me when i show up looking BUFF!!!!!!! ( he is 6'5 and weighs about 200. The man is a brick!) I need to exercise more but I am slowly cutting the junk food. I eat more salads , and grill instead of fry. I dont want to be 170 again but I would be happy with 180. It takes time but I intend to do it.

You got my full support.

I guess this means I wont have to worry about sending everyone My soft and ohhhhh soooo Gooey Chocolate chip cookies, my delicious Sugar cookies or Snickerdoodles. for Christmas. ( my cookies have won many local dessert contests) I  usually make about 80-100 dozen cookies during the Christmas season for friends and family. along with Bannana nut bread, brownies, and chex mix.

Weight Watchers is easier to follow than they make it.  They do have different plans, but the only one I know about is the flex plan.  I lost 15 pounds on it last time, and I've kept them off, but I slipped off of the plan when money was short, so I haven't lost any more.  My husband is really good at getting me to exercise too.  He'll walk with me and force me to go down to the pool when I don't want to.  Well, and a little bit of Dave's idea too.  To get back down to the weight I was when I met my husband, I would need to lose 45 pounds.  Since then I had a job that had me doing physical labor and now I'm behind a desk all day, I'm doubtful I'll get down that far, but I'd be happy (and healthy!) losing 35 more pounds.

So, you figure up points by using this formula: (total calories/50) + (fat/12) - (fiber/5) = points (the maximum number for fiber you can use is 4.  So, if something has 5 grams of fiber, you would still use 4.)

Then, for the Flex plan, you get so many points for the day and 35 points for the week.  There's more rules than this, but I don't know all of them.  I know you can only use a certain amount of your weekly points each day, but I don't know how much that is.  You can also get more points by exercising, but again, I don't know what that is.  But, I've done well with what I've got.

So here's the chart for daily points:

Weight Range (in pounds)   Points Range

Less than 150     18 to 23

150 to 174         20 to 25

175 to 199         22 to 27

200 to 224         24 to 29

225 to 249         26 to 31

250 to 274         28 to 33

275 to 299         29 to 34

300 to 324         30 to 35

325 to 349         31 to 36

 350 and above   32 to 37

Mz-
Where do I start - first of all brilliant idea!!  Drinking water is an EXCELLENT idea!  That totally helps.

I would love to lose weight but I get so bored w/ exercise.

I'm currently doing Slim Fast - but when I weighed myself I only lost 2 lbs.  Although people that I didn't see for awhile, could tell the difference.  Perplexing right?

I've tried a ton of stuff.  When I was married, we both did weight watchers - he lost weight and I didnt.  We tried atkins.  I got so sick of meat I almost gagged at the sight of more beef jerkey!!

So, those are my views.  But I will be your support however you need it.  And dave, youre a nut!!

I'm against any sort of diet that restricts what you can eat.  If I'm told "you can't eat that" even if I don't like it, I want it.  I've tried the Slimfast stuff, and I get so hungry, and there is so much sugar in it that I don't see how anyone can lose weight on that plan.

My big problem is bread and pasta.  I love bread!  Soft, gooey bread straight from the oven is the best, and I never even butter my bread!  And I know I need to exercise more, but I'm like you, I get bored with it real easy.  My husband helps, he convinces me to go walking and hiking and stuff.  And he goes with me, so it's some together time too.  I want to get a treadmill so I can read and exercise at the same time, that would make it so easy!

I forgot to tell you the trick of my diet - I don't diet on the weekend!

So it's like Sunday night and I'm sitting there chowing down on a can of frosting.   Not really but doesn't that sound good!!

No, I cheat a lot and I just checked sugar is the 3rd ingredient.  Hartz is so smart!  Now what am I going to do!

Star, one trick is to follow the serving size and eat foods high in fiber.  Most of us overeat.  And high fiber foods make you feel full longer, so you don't get hungry again as soon.

Back in the late 1990s I worked 12 hr nights running around fixing and running machines. I was 145 pds and could not gain a pound- I tried too- weight gain, a lot of cottage cheese and yogurt for protein- I just thought I had a high metabolism.

Then JD got himself a sit down job. A place with a lunchroom with catered meals. I bolooned upto 170 in 3 1/2 months NOT GOOD!!

But then I got e-coli and couldn't eat for a week and 1/2 NOT GOOD!!

But it got me down to 155. I am now at 160 and maintaining for 3 yrs.....but I DO NOT RECOMMEND THE E-COLI DIET PLAN!!

I switched to a sit down job, had some medical problems and had to take a medicine that had a side effect of weight gain, and decided to start cooking for a friend that needed a little help (a vegetarian that doesn't like vegetables, he needed some nutrients...), which made me gain so much weight!!!

You can count me in!

I could easily stand to lose a medium size person.

My wife and I believe that care with portion size and getting a lot more exercise will be keys for us.
We also plan to keep jounals of everything we eat, just so we can review and say "why did I feel I needed to eat THAT?"
I agree that mind set is the biggest thing.

We both now have sit at desk jobs and we are so brain dead at the end of each day that we have real trouble getting physically active.

I believe you need to be careful with weigh-ins, short term some people will dihydrate themselves to show a loss and drinking lots of water is something I think you need to do.

Lets Go!

I feel so good about this!  I'm waiting until next week to really start the diet, but I've taken my vitamins this morning and I've drank a glass and a half of water so far!  Everyone here is such  great support for each other, and this could really work out well!
