Um, have you seen this year's Phillies? The pitching usually is okay but the offense is broken. They get guys on base and can't get them across the plate. I didn't really see any of the games. I saw a little bit last night. But they were getting beat up early and I pretty much ignored them for the rest of the evening.
I didn't hear you thanking them for the 4 game sweep of the Reds right before the All Star break.

Yeah, that's true. The sweep of the Reds was pretty sweet.
It showed me that the Reds are just like the Brewers. Can look great against the mid-level clubs when they're going good, but as soon as they face good pitching they go back to being sucky.
The Brewers were poised to take 3 of 4 from Atlanta this weekend and blew it on Sunday.
We have days where our starting pitchers implode. They will have three or four good, solid strts and then they have a game where they look like they are throwing batting practice.

I don't like them either. I was hoping the Phillies could continue putting together a run to start the second half and maybe win 3 of 4. It didn't happen.

Sorry JR the Phillies blew it again last night. They are in St. Louis for 4 games. The Phillies had a 3-0 lead after the top of the 1st last night. One would think that would indicate that they should do well and win the game. But . Kendrick beyond sucks. Last time I saw it, it was 4-2 Phillies. Then when I returned it was 5-4 Cards. I gave up on them after that. The Phillies gave up 4 homeruns in 3 outs time. The Cards got a 3 run shot by Pujols to take the lead and then they got 3 more hits over the rest of that inning and the start of the next. Yep, all homeruns.

It's not like we're actually going anywhere. Though I am impressed we continue to claw our way back toward 500. If we can win the next two against our whipping boys (the Pirates) we'll be only 4 or 5 under the 500 mark.
It's weird, the Pirates play really well against you and they OWN the Cubs.
But for some reason they just can't beat us. Our numbers against them are insane. We won like 21 straight at Miller Park against them, and 19 of 21 at their stadium during the same time.
The only year the Phillies had a winning record in Pittsburgh (in their new park) was 2008. I was there for one of those games. And, of course, that is the year the Phils won the World Series.

Back in the early 2000's the Brewers were starting to feel like they might not be too bad of a club, even though they were just holding on around the 500 mark.
They swept a three game series from the Cubs and all the players wore these hideous looking suits to the airport for their trip to Pittsburgh. The players called em' their sweep suits. I remember cringing when I read about it and thinking "way to ask for some bad karma you idiots"
They proceeded to get swept by the last place Pirates. It essentially sent them on a losing streak they never recovered from and the season was lost. For the next five years we couldn't buy a win against Pittsburgh.
They start at six Fuzz. Gallardo is pitching his first game since his injury. Hopefully he can earn a split in the series for us to keep it from being a disaster. 4-4 would be an ok road trip, though disappointing after a 2-1 start against the Braves.
There's a hot rumor around here that we may be trading Fielder to the White Sox for their top pitching prospect. I hope it happens.
I miss the baseball of the 80's, where when you developed these players they could stay with your team their entire career unless you traded them. STOOPID CURT FLOOD!
Not many players stay with one or two teams for the entire career. The Phillies have developed a lot of their guys (mostly field players) that have been around for years now. Namely Utley, Howard, Rollins, Burrell (not resigned after after 08). A few of out pitchers have made it through that way too - Happ and Hamels. They traded away a boatload of talent the last two years though. Of course, there are still some chips down there just waiting for their chance.
I had seen something about rumor the other day involving Fielder and for whom he would be a good fit.

You're Phillies had a sweep this weekend, so did the Brewers. Granted, the Brewers did it against the Nationals, but we'll take it!
I was so excited about it I dreamt last night that I checked my phone and found out the Brewers traded for Roy Oswalt. To make it even better we gave up a bunch of guys that haven't been with us for the last two years.
Bottom line is, we're 7-4 since the all star break, and closer to 500 than we've been in three months.
If we sweep the Reds at Miller Park the next three days we're back in this thing. If we win 2 of 3 we're still a long-shot for even being in the race, if we lose 2 or 3 we're pretty much done.
Every game counts as two in the Games Behind column for us the next three days.
GO BREWERS! GO PHILLIES!!! (You know, the Brewers only have four fewer wins than you guys!)
The Phillies did indeed take 3 from the Rockies over the weekend. They have won four in a row. They have a wrap around series with the Rockies this afternoon. So I am hoping the Phillies win again, make it a sweep and that I am finally going to get the first of three 8-10 game winning streaks from the Phillies. They were doing better going into the break and then fell apart after it. They have started to rebound. The Braves have to start losing soon.
I did see later last night that the Brewers swept the Nationals. Good job. I am sure it would be great for the guys to take at least 2 of three from the Cards. I am all for it.
I am headed to DC next weekend. Going to do a little sight seeing (it has been years since I have been down there) and take in the Friday and Saturday night games.
Let's go Phillies! Let's go Brewers!

Well, the Phillies pulled it out today. They started in a 2-0 hole after 1/2 an inning. Went ahead 3-2, then 5-2. Of course Lidge came in and decided to give the Rockies 2 more runs. Proceeded to load the bases with 2 outs and then the last guy grounded out.
That is 5 in a row. Let's see where they go from here. Go Phils!

Well JR, my Phillies have taken Oswalt out of the division for you for the next year and two months. I didn't really want him. I wanted them to keep Lee. There was no reason to trade him in the offseason and give up prospects. If he didn't sign at the end of the year, the Phils would have received two top picks. I would have liked to see Happ develop more over the next year.
I'll tell you though, the Astros have a lot of former Phillies down there now. Guess that is what happens when you former GM moves to a new place.

JR - I saw that your Brewers decided to see how long they could go this past weekend without scoring a run against the Astros. I don't know the score of Sunday's game, but I did see the Friday and Saturday night shutout scores. I told you that I didn't want the Phillies to trade Happ. You saw first hand Friday night why.

Because Amaro Jr. is not a good GM. He gave up Happ for Oswalt, which for the record I will state again was not a good move) and he had absolutley no reason to give up Lee last winter.
We were in DC this weekend. Went to the Friday and Saturday night games. Oswalt pitched Friday night and looked awful. He gave up a triple on his first or second pitch as a Phillies player. It was downhill from there. The Phils offense sputtered, again. Blanton gave up 3 runs Saturday night in the first inning (with two outs). The offense sputtered again Saturday night but came back (slowly) to finally take their first lead in the 9th inning. Lidge promptly blew the game in the 9th. Dunn hit a walk-off 3 run homerun. DEAD CENTER FIELD I tell you.
