If there is blackmail going on, at least do it right. JD you are going to have to do a lot of serious sucking up. No slacking.

It's queenfhartz.blogspot.com. I haven't been able to upload pictures for a while though, so it's not as up to date as I would like.

Class went well! I love the teacher that I am co-teaching with. Typical freshmen- some real quiet and some too obnoxiuos for their own good! That was always me though! This class is a one hour class, so not real time consuming- guest speakers and fun stuff! I was not even shaking one bit- maybe I need to go back to school myself and get out of this side of college!

HEY!  That pre-school admittance test was HARD dammit!

Besides, I wound up cruisin' through pre-school in only four years, that's not so bad!  By the time I was in first grade I was the undisputed king of the classroom.

Ruby tell us more about this now! what do you got to do, are you a TA teacher assistant, what are your responsibilities, how are you feeling about it so far- now that you did it do you have a clearer idea of what you want to do, accomplish & stuff??

Sorry I missed your question. The class is a one hour freshmen seminar class. THe students are grouped by their initial choice of a major. The instructor will be their advisor. Our school has taken this class, which has been taught for years and added a new component. In each class will be a teacher, a staff member (me) and an upperclassmen. We are there for additional contacts for the students. The school's main goal is to increase retention. They believe that if every freshman has exposure to various people on campus, they might stay longer. Not go home at Xmas and not come back. My role is to help her tune into the students needs, monitor their grades in other classes, make myself available for any kind of help- where is the counseling office, where is the best pizza place, where's the beach???  We have guest speakers- counseling center, career planning, tour the library, do a scavenger hunt. We also will go to various campus activities together- football games, rallies, etc.. Hey we are even hosting American Idol tryouts next month!

Anyway, we will continue with the same group next semester for a different type of career planning course.

My teacher is counting on me to help grade papers, look out for kids that need help, plan some fun activities and keep my office door open! I think it is a neat idea. I was surprised how calm I was and what I had to offer as far as the orientation process to college life!

Ruby that sounds sooo great and soooo necessary!!! I sure hope the kids appreciate it, realize that its a good thing and use it well!! After my freshman orientation, where they tried to get me to sign up for whatever, I was given an id, a bill, and a boot out of line to find my way. My bad forever taking the attitude "here is my money, now do your job and educate me!" LOL!!!!!!!

Sounds like a great program that you are involved with!! Plus to have someone as caring as you involved too- I think the kids will see their experience as the real deal!!!

Yeah I thin it is a good idea too. It is somewhat copied from some model from Loyola University. But we have expanded it to a year long program!

Hey I am getting paid an extra $300 to do it (for 14 hours! I think that is 21 an hour!) Plus I get out of the office. And who knows it might help. There are statistics that show that 50% won't be back next year. It is a world wide problem, we are just trying to change our numbers, even by 10%!

I love working at a Christian college. God is everywhere and the kids are usually good kids with level heads and a love for God!

pre-med has got to be rough. The pressure these kids must be under- be it parent or self-imposed. I guess now is the time for them to see if its a calling or if something else is better for them.

My brother's best friend is sheer genius. This kid, when 10 yrs old, was able to read the book and figure out the rubriks cube. I couldnt get 4 pages into it before throwing in the towel. In college we took symbolic logic together.....what frustrated me came as 2nd nature to him.....but he is true to himself. He is happy living in a van working canning in alaska, and in a guitar shop in Aspen on the off-season. He will never be rich, but he is soooo freee. that is what his wisdom taught him.

Yeah and you are so right about whose dream it really is. I see that a lot in my job. Kids in majors that make no sense. A biology major with a 2.00 GPA is wasting their time. It is my job to help them get out of college with something. Sometimes that means changing from education or nursing to a social science degree.
