Katrina's Aftermath

We got off easy. I've got 4.2 inches in my rain gauge.

I guess I knew it was going to happen but I can't believe the looting going on. The Mayor of New Orleans has declared his city closed.

My wife's company has a plant in New Orleans. She talked to one of the gals who got out. She and her husband went to Houston. She lives in St. Bernard Parish, which is where one of the levee's breached. She said they had several neighbors who were going to ride it out. Jenny said you could hear the the fear and desperation in her voice. They don't know where to go or what to do.

I can't imagine being in that position.

lets see, declare marshall , then sit back and watch the looting and say "were doing what we can "  ya rite , did ya notice what 'ethnic persusion ' the looters were ? and the 'ethnic persusion ' of the cops watching them ?  it was the 1st thing that caught my eye. hope they friggin drown like the rats they are.  whats the point of declaring marshall law if your not going to shoot looters ?  as for the rest , sigh , I can't imagine what lies ahead , so much death and destruction to deal with , more than people should have to bear.     side note- do ya think hollywood will have a benifit concert? or Clinton / Bush heading up the relief ? I'm guessing -not . sigh . what a mess ,  ps- gas has already gone up 30 cents a gallon here , our guv. says florida will need to conserve, sure let the tourists buy it all , what a joke. happy g.d. thursday.

Dave you are wound up! I hate to break it to you but it's only day.

Some stations here are out of gas and I've seen one station with regular at $2.99. My wife overheard a clerk in one station ask another clerk how may "3's" they had.

I can understand looting grocery and convenience stores. People need food and water. But clothing and jewelry store looters are another story.

JD- Sorry to tell you but it looks like the Quarter is getting raided by looters. It's a shame.

You know, the white settlers that came to America weren't very smart when they started making cities. And then those settlements turned into trading posts, and then cities in spots where you should've had cities. Who thought that the water could be held back out of New Orleans forever? I was always told I'd love New Orleans for all the history and culture there. I've always wanted to go. I'm sad that I'll never be able to see it that way. But it looks like Mother Nature won. I just hope that the city will be able to be restored to some semblance of what it once was.

I have been awaiting the rain through the wee hours of the morning and it never arrived. It is just starting to do something here in the past hour or so. But it is barely a sprinkle and not constant.

I think it will have to be....the tourism is the industry there, plus its one of the biggest shipping ports in the world......but right now it seems like its going to get a whole lot worse before even starting to turn around. I think of the looters stealing stuff before they die....

We had some hellacious winds last night, do you think it could be from Katrina up this far? We need a meterologist on the forum.

Sparky, it looks like your winds are cming from the west, a different front than Katrina.

I wanted to be a meterologist once. But it doesn't pay all that much and it's not a very rewarding job...

just read on yahoo , now there are gangs of armed looters roaming the streets and shooting at the police....  what ever you do , don't shoot the first one and make an example out of em , nope , its so much more fun to have running gun battles in the streets .  food i can sorta see , but then again not, how ya gonna cook it ? or open the can ?  seems to me someone has dropped the ball big time on the whole situation .  why is / has it taken so long to get some national guard help in there , not the 200 they got , i mean  10,000 from surrounding states , by the time they do , there wont be any need as everything worth stealing will be stolen , anybody needing help will be beyond help . These a**hole politicians  who are  "asking for boats, bulldozers etc" should be flat out commendering them . THAT IS THE PURPOSE OF DECLARING MARSHALL LAW !!  guarantee you 1 thing , had I been gov. the first thing i woulda done is drive a bulldozer straight to down town followed by a truck load of guardsmen with 1 order ...

There is one thing about having a town like New Orleans in dire straights... because it's such a tourist town people have history there. People have memories of parties, good times, proposals, etc. It means so much to so many people who don't live there that the call for help will be answered much swifter, I think, by everyone than if it was just some town no on had heard of. That's a good thing, I think.

What haunts me more than anything else is think of all the animals people left behind thinking they'd only be holed up at the stadium or out of town for a few days at the monst. And now they're saying 12 to 16 weeks before people can return? It's a death sentence for thousands of pets who are going to starve to death if they haven't drowned already.

I know there are organizations out thre specifically to come to the rescue of pets in situations like this - if anyone knows legit ones (I fear those con artists who come out of the woodwork purporting to be an aid agency)... but I'd personally like to donate to the animal cause in this tragedy. My office is doing a matching donation plan shortly - they're putting it together now matching employee contributions.

Zim - that is a great idea as I feel you are right about the pets ,  1 reason people don't go to shelters is because they don't allow pets . that is what keeps me from going to them , leave my babies behind ?  NO ------ WAY !

I can't imagine leaving my pets behind, but a lot of people think differently than I do. I wish I could bring my "children" on vacation with me!

Zim, it looks like you can help through the Humane Society. And they're a national charity.

I was at my local convience store last night , there was a 20 something year old guy in front of me , he lives (lived) in a small town in Miss. he hasn't heard 1 word about it . poor kid was kinda lost .(inside) .  also -there are quite a number of people from La. , Miss. Ala . staying in the area , most have set up camp at a walmart parking lot , hundreds and hundreds of RV.'s and campers , the Red Cross is doing what it can . there are also a lot of semis here , the drivers have no idea what route to take West ,and with the price of diesel going up ,there shaking their heads .

The looting enrages me.  Did you all see the Wal-Mart?  As soon as my contract is done, it will boggle your mind when I tell you what Wal-Mart does in situations like this.
