A mile in my shoes

Watching the looting and lawlessness play out in New Orleans, I got to thinking....Some people were stealing nonsensical items (like TV's)....But I wondered what my reaction would be to no food or water for days?  I wouldnt be shooting at helicopters or police, but how far would I go to survive.  You never know until you are in that situation.

But, if there were no food or water at your disposal...would your morals be put on hold to survive?...would this bring out the best in you or the worst?

If somebody already broke the window of the grocery store, for example - I may take a few can goods for my family - I mean what's like 79 cents in the scheme of things??  And if it was a matter of survival - you gotta do what you gotta do.  I wouldn't just parish away to nothing while other people ate entire cakes from the bakery and what not.

food, water, shelter, warm clothes, yes I would loot. I think that it would be more immoral not to, actually!

As far as these turkey taking 50 pairs of Air Jordans....well, see Dave's haiku in the haiku thread!!

I understand the reasoning behind the looting--but I do not understand the non essentials.  I can tell you that every Wal-Mart that got looted, the suppliers have to restock the shelves at no charge to Wal-Mart--so again the consumer pays.  Wal-Mart is not out any money.  It just means that more companies are going to have to trim, you will see layoffs, wage reduction, decreased benefits.  These people were told to leave.  If the news reported that a 8.0 earthquake was going to strike by morning, I sure would not be sitting in my house.  Tough one.  but this is also why I keep guns in my house.

I would have no problem looting for food and water if I were in that situation. I'd also have no problem with making restitution once I was back on my feet.

The reality of it is any food products that were in the city of New Orleans would have gone to waste anyway. The stores weren't going to be able to get it and reuse it more than likely.

But the looting of TV's and other items was dispicable. These are the people that will be grabbing at your feet trying to pull you into the pits if you are ever unfortunate enough to be walking through the gates of hell.

I was irritated by the comment someone made about the violence occuring... someone from the tsunami area said that it shows where the civilized people really live... stating that mugging and rapes didn't take place after the tsunami... that even people who lost everything helped those in need. I followed those stories as much as I'm following these, and there WERE reports of rapes, theft and child abduction. It slays me what people say... Crisis is going to bring the best out in some people, and the worst out in others - don't tell me that's cultural... it's human nature.

It's always easier to point the finger and bitch and moan.  People have selective memories.  I remember, too, the violence that hit the Tsunami victims.  I think that is universal.  When people are that desperate they only have the most basic instincts available.  That being survival.

However, those who know they will survive then prey on the most desperate.  That is what we are seeing.

I agree completely. These people are in survival mode. No food and water for days can cloud your mind and judgment too. I totally understand looting food and clothing, not tvs and ten pairs of shoes, but if it is what floats their boat, so be it.

This disaster surely has brought out the worst in many people and government officials.

ah yes, government. Another case of talking the talk, but when push comes to shove, not being able to walk the walk. which is an absolute disgrace, because they have their hands deep in the pockets of every man, woman, or child that has earned a dime. Even through unemployment compensation.

Considering the logistics involved...what does everyone think should have been done?  Alot of these people still wont leave their homes...no roads, snipers...water up to the roof tops....lets keep it in perspective guys...how do you prepare for the unprecedented...a 3 state disaster?  The government isnt a fairy godmother.  Only God performs miracles.

I think the lack of timeliness in the response is what is so disturbing. 5 days??
