Hurricane help- Ray made a good point....

In an earlier thread Ray had suggested that not everyone can afford to help by donating money to the hurricane victims. I, for one, am strapped this month. BUT we all have clothes we don't wear anymore. We can take the time to bag these up and drop them off at the salvation army and indicate that these are to go to help the hurricane victims.

This is a great suggestion, ray. As summer turns to fall, I go through the clothes and see what or will not be worn anymore. Instead of tossing, or putting back into the closet, I am going to donate these clothes.

I've already started a Goodwill bag. I think I'll take them to the Salvation Army this time instead.

Because we just moved the money is tight although i help when I can. We went through and are discarding all our old out of date clothes along with ones we cant wear anymore plus other things that we do not need anymore and getting them to the Salvation Army.

My company ( U.S Cellular) is doing a food drive and Dillards which had 9 stores affected by this tragedy is hosting a cookout in Tulsa with donations of 2.00 plus donate 5.00 and we get to dress casually for the day. ( not jeans but business casual)

A quote from the Salvation Army's website:

"Due to the uncertainty of specific needs and a desire for The Salvation Army to meet as many of those needs as possible, we are not able to accept in kind donations at this time.

Please continue to donate clothing, bric-a-brac and furniture to your local Salvation Army in support of their ongoing programs in your community"

If you really want to contribute to the refugees plight and can't give money, I'd suggest ebaying stuff and give your cash profit to them.

I was just browsing eBay for the word Katrina. Apparently, not only can you sell things on eBay for charity, but an organization called MissionFish guarantees that the seller's stated amount gets transferred directly to their charity... so if you make sure your items are "MissionFish" certified you are liable to get higher bids on items too.

eBaying your stuff for those who lost theirs

Hmm.. in reading more they do take their own share... $3 + 2.9%. That seems kind of high, is it me? I guess you have to ask whether people will donate that much more if it's legitimately for charity.

And also, I've eBayed lots of clothes.... especially kids clothing. I make some of my best transactions on clothes, so don't discouunt them as only good for yardsales and Goodwill. In good condition, especially name brand, they sell.

Yes, MissionFish does take a percentage, basically to cover the credit card fees that credit companies charge, but it makes things a whole lot easier on the charity. If you want to make a charitable listing on eBay, you either have to post a letter from the charity or go through MissionFish. At work, I am the only one that works with the eBay stuff, and by experience I can say it is SOOOOO much easier for the charity if you go through MissionFish.

Thanks for explaining that, MZ, that makes sense... it definitely gives people peace of mind that it's not some scam. People who post fake charity sites and aid scams have to be absolutely the lowest form of living organism, if you want to call that living...
