4-H Club

Was anyone ever a member of 4-H??? I am not even sure if its just a Wisconsin thing even?

Well anyway, one of our clients at work is 4-H. If you have a recent 4-H publication, chances are that it was me who formatted it for printing, added the photographs, did editing work on it.

Today I have a few new revs that I am making to the following publications:

Acquatic Insects of Wisconsin

Small Turkey Flock Management

Pollution Control Guide for Milking Center Wastewater Management

Aquatic insects of Wisconsin--I guess that it is why it is nicknamed the shovel and swat state.

We have 4-H here too.

My folks were leaders when I was young but I never became a regular member.

Are you kidding?

A Nebraska farm kid and not be in 4-H ???

It's a family tradition around here. I always had Market Steers, Market Heifers, Stocker Feeders, etc. in the fair. A few years I was the only one with homing pigeons too!

JD - does it go something like this:

1. Build a fenced in area

2. Buy some turkeys

3. Put turkeys in yard

4. Feed turkeys grain twice daily (don't forget a water bin too)

5. Make the turkeys fat

6. Sell turkeys

7. Put them on a truck

8. Take profits and start over

That was always the hard part about 4-H for me. With the market cattle, you spent 8 months with them, teaching them to lead on a halter, feeding every day, washing, etc. They really do become pets.

Then at the end of the fair, you sell the cattle to the highest bidder knowing that in a few days, that steer/heifer was going to get a slug in its head and some "Packer" would be cutting it into small pieces.

A few days later, you get to deposit that big fat check and suddenly you feel better.

When I was in . . . it was called "Tractor Safety".

I guess they just assumed we already knew each other.

Getting Aquainted With Your Tractor

Hi. Would you like me to top off your tank?

What are your feeling about a picnic in an open meadow?

Or is it more like - Hey what does this lever do?
