We had one of these threads before, a looong time ago.
What do you think will be some upcoming future technology?
(And I don't mean nail polish with a slanted brush.)
I had a discussion with someone over the weekend how future phones were portrayed in the 90's. Science fiction phones could do stuff like video calling and holograms, but THEY WERE ALWAYS PLUGGED IN! Now look at iPhones. How the heck didn't we guess that?
My prediction for the future pretty much compounds on that. Right now I look out the window and see telephone poles and electric lines (I'm also across the street from a power station). I think in 10 or 20 years, wires will be obsolete. Everything will be wireless, including electricity. I don't know how, but that's where I think we're headed.
Maybe lasers . . . I heard just a couple days ago that they have figured out a way to basically run a laser in reverse to capture a beam from another laser and turn it back into electricity. That would in effect be wireless transmission of electricity. The problem with any of those things though is efficiency. Every time you convert energy, you lose some in the process. Some physics just can't be avoided.
We used to think we'd all be in flying cars, but I don't see that happening. We can't keep from killing ourselves driving on the ground, I don't see being 1,000 feet in the air helping that.
I think battery technology will get better and better.
More automation with computers doing more things for us all the time.
If you really think about it, there is no such thing as "science fiction" anymore.
I predict that technology will kill society -- not like dead-dead, but more like common sense-dead -- and one day there will be a huge interruption in communication (think Y2K), and the world will just stop because the technology we embrace to run our lives will cease to do so and everyone will panic. There will be mass chaos; in desperation survival instincts will kick in and people will do whatever they need just to eat.
I'm thinking about buying some goats, planting a garden, and buying more guns...

I think you're right, DS. We will become more and more dependent on technology just to get through a day.
The technology already exists to wipe out electronics with a big electromagnetic pulse. It's been proven on a small scale and some believe our own defense has the capability on a very large scale. It's just a matter of time until someone big enough is able to get one large enough launched over the top of us and we'll be rendered ineffective as a society.
I don't think it's just us as Americans, I think the whole civilized world is becoming very dependent on technology for daily living.

Ah, more guns. That reminds me. I need to get to the range and get a little practice in. I didn't get a chance to get there between Christmas and New Years while I was on vacation.

I recently invested in an auxillary shotgun shell holder and some military grade shells for my street sweeper. I'm feeling pretty prepared for the upcoming zombie apocalypse.
I don't know about the distant future, but I can forsee someone taking a punch to the throat if this day continues to progress along the current trajectory.

My prediction for the future...the Green bay Packers will win more Super Bowls and continue to lead the NFL in Championships (4 Superbowl wins and 9 other Champioships...13 in all).
