How does your garden grow?

So, what are we going to grow in our gardens this year?

With produce prices (along with everything else) through the roof, are you planning to grow more produce in your own garden?

I don't like tomatoes, so growing the big summer fruit is out for me. But I do think I'm going to expand my growing this year.

Bell peppers, small cucumbers, strawberries, green beans and mint.

If I'm feeling daring I may add a few things.

We're limited to whatever we can stick in our little patio area, so I normally don't grow veggies. We grow catnip and morning glory, and I have a rose plant that only thrives in the summer (right now it's leaf-less). I do have a few indoor plants too: a philodendron named Fred who is boss of all the other plants, a peace lily that doesn't die no matter how much I neglect it, some aloe, and a couple leafy plants that were from my grandma's funeral that I have no clue what they are.

I used to put in a garden up until a couple of years ago when it got too expensive to water it.  For years my city water bill was $30.00 per month, then it started inching up (just like everything else) and I now pay $80.00 per month for water.  It'd be even more if I had to water a garden.  It's cheaper for me to go to the Farmers' Market and buy directly from them than it is for me to have a garden.

Cucumbers, bell peppers, and green beans are good choices for your garden Fuzzy.  smileI've never tried strawberries; good luck with those. Hope you get more than the birds do.

I've had strawberries the last few years - but just a few vines. I do a good job of keeping the birds away. I also don't get too many berries. But this year I think I'll do better, especially if I pay attention to them.

If I had a real, honestly true local farmer's market I would have no issues buying and supporting the local farmers. Or even if I could find the market share program like Mz has, I would shop there.

My yard is not really well suited for a garden as such. I have lots of flowers. Did try growing some green beans and tomatoes in a barrel once. Perhaps I'll do some green beans or maybe broccoli... haven't really thought about it. I'd suppose, much like everything, it depends on when I will be here or not. hmm.gif

Holy crap!

$80/month just for water?

Holy crap!

I had to go grab our currrent city utility bill to see what it is this month.

$79.73 for electricity which includes an electric water heater.

$16.33 for water.

$23.70 for sewer.

$16.25 for trash.

Our natural gas bill for heat is separate.

Our water and electric use goes up in the summer with watering the lawn and the A.C. but . . . $80 just for water?

Did I mention: Holy crap!

I get one bill for the water/sewer/trash. Usually $200 per quarter. And the water is the cheapest thing out of the three services.

Yeah, my water bill is outrageous!!  And that doesn't include sewer either; that's an additional $70.00 a month!  My city's water & sewer funds used to be a separate part of the City's budget....the Water & Sewer Division were pretty much self-funded; the money they received from customers for water and sewer services were kept within the Water & Sewer department so when water mains or sewers had to be replaced the money was there to do it.  Well, the City ran itself into financial ruins, and the only department that was making any money was Water & Sewer.  So City Council decided that Water & Sewer funds were going to be directed to the City's General Funds.  And because they raid General Funds all the time, they keep raising my water and sewer rates to help balance their budget.  hmm

My trash bill is part of my property taxes; I pay $250 a year for trash pickup.  But I do get another separate yearly bill for an additional $50.00 for trash....they say it's "to pick up big items such as refrigerators."  So in all actuality, I pay $300.00 a year for trash.....everybody that lives in the City pays this same amount.

My electric is pretty close to your's; this month it's $67.97 and that's WITHOUT an electric hot water heater.

My gas usage (heat, cooking stove, clothes dryer, hot water heater) this month is $90.60.  It's on the downward slope now that the harshest winter months are over.  Both electric and gas come on one bill.

So I not only pay more than you do for gas in my car, but also for water and sewer.  I probably pay more for other stuff too if we were to compare costs for them.  hmm

Maaaan... I pay about $65 per month for water/sewer and waste removal (includes yard waste and recycling). My electric bill for last month was high, but lower than the previous months... around $130. Natural gas was around $150, but in the coming months will be more like $20-25 once the heater isn't running.
