The most influential band/artist ever is...

Complete this sentence: If it weren't for -----, music would not be the same as it is today.

Many many bands have been influential on today's pop and rock, but I would say the most influential was The Beatles. I don't think our modern day rock or pop would be the same without them. Personally, pre-Beatles, I don't think rock would've been my favorite genre; I probably would've listened to more motown instead.

Good point, young Molly.

Let us not overlook the influence of Nirvana and how they shaped the face of music in the 1990s. How many of the hair-metallers proclaim "Kurt Cobain killed my career!!"

I don't know if I would attribute that to Nirvana, or just the grunge movement. I think even if Nirvana would not have existed, you could say the same thing abut Pearl Jam. In a similar aspect, I don't think pop would be the same today without disco.

I think you could go back to Elvis. He inspired the Beatles. However, Elvis was inspired by gospel music and the spiritual music and gospel music from the predominately black churches. Which got their inspiration from the songs the slaves sung in the cotton fields of the south. Which also inspired the jazz age. I don't think you can pin point it. There are threads that tie all music together in some form.

Oh yeah. Elvis said he studied the way Dean Martin phased his songs and used that when he sang.

I'm not saying anyone's right or wrong, just in your opinion...

I think that Led Zeppelin must count for something.

I agree on the Pop, Madonna and Michael Jackson.

I also think both Led Zepplin and Stevie Ray Vaughn, in different ways, influenced the fusion between blues and rock.

He's not a group, but I think Berry Gordy really shaped music. He was the man behind Motown. I still love Motown hits.

I think there are many bands that can influence others...musicians areshameless recyclers, and there are just so many ways to rearrange music in any given key...but if a body of work stands the test of time....that is influence.
