I used to be a big fan of Magnum P.I. . I picked up the DVD set recently and noticed that episodes were 48 minutes and 30 seconds long.
I also picked up the series Lost recently and noticed those episodes were 42 minutes long
USA Today also had an article about how the commercials are now positioned during the shows which seems to accentuate the commercials even more.
I am not a huge TV fan. There are a few shows I like, and Sports are a big reason for TV...but does the increase in commercials alter your viewing habits? Do you use the TV technology?
Has TV reached the saturation point with commercials?
I only get PBS (I refuse to pay for cable, and no other channels will come in), so I catch all my shows when they come out on DVD. So I'm commercial-free!
With busy schedules anyway, it is just easier to tape the shows I want to see and then watch them over the weekend. For the most part, no commercials involved. Of course this means I have to have the time to sit and watch all the stuff I tape. Luckily, I am good at multitasking.

I saw a segment on the Today show that was talking about TV Theme songs and how they are waning, but they also said that tv shows went from 4 minutes to 10 minutes worth of commericals in a 30 minute segment!

We watch more TV than we should. I think a lot of time, the TV's on but no one is really watching it.
The time when commercials bother me the most are the late night movies on USA, SciFi, etc. They start the movie and it runs about 20 minutes before a commercial. That helps to keep from losing you during the first commercial. Towards the end of the movie, it's a commercial about every five minutes because they know you are too close to the end to want to stop. Thats when I get frustrated . . . it's 1:30 am, I'm tired and want to go to bed, but also want to see how the movie ends and 20 of the last 30 minutes are commercials.
I think in our near future, more regular shows will evolve into pay-per-view via the internet. You'll pay a fee or monthly fee to watch just the shows you want. You'll download them through the internet and watch them on your own schedule commercial free.
I'm watching a weekly TV show now from digitallifetv.com. It's a tech show and it has a few short commercials, so it's free. They are big downloads, but with a fast connection, it doesn't take long.
I really do believe that over time, TV will evolve into a download to your computer type thing . . . or at least more shows will have that as a commercial free option for a small fee.
I think I saw an ala carte deal up here years ago molly- you could pick 6 channels. that would be cool. remember the springsteen song "57 Channels and Nothing On"? Well its 157 now.

Exactly! I don't need a bajillion kazillion channels. Give me my local channels and let me select a few others. Something like $5 for HBO, $2.50 for USA, etc. If you want to watch a show on another channel that you don't normally subscribe to, make it a pay per view thing.
I am the networks nightmare. I have satellite feeds of both New York and LA--so I TIVO the east coast programs I want to watch-then fast forward during the comercials. If I don't, I delay watching the program for about fifteen min. Then I begin watching and fast forward during the commercials. If you don't have TIVO, you have just got to get it. To be able to pause live tv and fast forward is awesome.
Hey Molly, take a closer look at Insight Cable. I think you can do someting like that but the cost to go ala carte is prohibitive. I have Insight for the broadband internet connection. It's like $100 a month for digital cable and the broadband. When I switched from the Dish Network 4 years ago it only cost another 25 bucks a month vs additional phone line, internet access and basic satellite programing I had at the time. Plus I don't have to get out and knock the snow off the dish in the winter to get reception.
I've looked into Insight, and they have different levels of service. Even the basic programming is something like $40 a month, and I still wouldn't get the channels I wanted.
My hubby has to have Speed, TBS and every other channel that shows racing! My son has to have his Mtv- although I always make him turn it off- too offensive! (Not our Mtv huh!) and what woman does not like Lifetime movies??? Not me really, but if I got PMS real bad, I watch it and then I am ready to kill!
oh yea hartz, you're into drag racing; you'd LOVE the ESPN 2!!!
I remember watching that channel and the extreme sports one christmas and getting ticked off. THere was some sort of motorcross obstacle course where 40 bikes were racing on a track that could barely fit 20. THen it was like a big tragedy or suprise when there were wipe outs, injuries, and accidents. DUHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!
