A study in human nature

We all make mistakes...
heck, I even made one once...just to see what it was like.

I know that it depends how we are made aware of our mistakes...but it seems like more and more, people take a defensive posture or deny involvement.

Coinciding with this is a lack of tolerence for other people's mistakes. Its almost like we hold others to higher standards than we hold ourselves. Traffic is a great example of this.

If Nixon would have accepted responsibility for Watergate and apologized, I believe he would have finished his 2nd term without scandal. History is full of lessons like this.

This is a pretty broad topic and I am sure that some patterns and tangents will emerge...

but do you generally take ownership of mistakes?

Apologize?

MAke amnds?

Deny reponsibility?

Hold others to a higher Standard than yourself?

What trends do you notice in other people's behavior?

excellent question(s) here- especially holding others to a standard higher than yourself. To answer that, one would really have to know oneself well, to objectify themselves for a clear honest view. I do not know if I hold others to a standard higher than I hold myself. I like myself tho and think I'm a good hard-working person. I know from experience that I don't make a good supervisor because I hold the people I work with to the SAME standard that I hold myself. And people I've worked with are not only lazy, but whiny and incompetent. Some smell. Others pick their nose.

We kind of talked about this the other day when Molly made a mistake on her website. I own up to my own and I also realize that if you make a mistake, that you are working. But with that said some make more than others and when they become a habit, I get irritated. I am a supervisor and I hate it. I leave my people alone though when they make mistakes. I will point it out, but if it keeps happening I find myself fixing it myself and moving on!

Hopefully I've proven to even the forum that I own up to my mistakes. I learn what I did wrong and move on. If they're big enough, sometimes I have a hard time letting it go and keep mulling it over in my mind.

I've been a supervisor before, and I think generally I don't hold people accountable enough. And I'm more likely to forgive someone if they admit to making a mistake, learn from it, and move on. But at the same time, there are things that I notice and may say nothing about, but I still hold it against someone. For example, I'm sure every office has one, the person who's always sick or having emergencies or having to leave early, etc. I'm one of those people who is over-dedicated and I rarely take a day off work, and I have a hard time accepting that people really do stay home if they're not feeling well.

I won't lie, nor am I embarrassed to admit that several years ago my wife and I went to a psychiatrist.  I have something called Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.  I learned a couple of things from him that really hit home.

1.  The one yelling the loudest is usually the one with the most to hide.

2.  We criticize and despise in others the weakness and traits  we sometimes fail to acknowledge but detest in ourselves.

Another Wise Man said, he that hath no sin amongst you, let him cast the first stone.

I tackle my mistakes head on--infact--have the reputation of enjoying confrontation.  I don't enjoy it, but I do not back away from it.

I pray daily for patience, tolerance and the ability to accept and learn from my own weakness--probably why Jack Daniels and I get along so well.

For the most part, I'm a "show me" kind of guy.

If you tell me I'm wrong, I can certainly take it, but you gotta show me how, and where I screwed up.

If I'm doing something and you tell me it's wrong just because "that's the way we've always done it", that won't fly with me. If I am convinced in my mind that I'm doing it right but you can prove to me another way is better, no problem, let's do it your way. Just be prepared to show me why.

I think in many cases mistakes are forgivable if they are honest people who made honest mistakes, own up to it, and do the best they can to correct the situation. Its when the sniveling ba$tards try to weasel their way out of responsibility that I find unforgivable.
