Monday -- A new week / a new month

Today is the 213th day of the year.  Only 152 more to go.  And 21 weekends until Christmas.

My car broke down Friday on the way home from work.  Fortunately it happened right at a auto repair shop.  It needs a new alternator and battery.  I hadn't planned on going anywhere over the weekend, but not having the option made it miserable.  I should get it back today.

Happy monday.

Good day all.

Ugh, I sympathize with you DS. I hate being without a car.

I did a lot of swimming this weekend. Sometimes I avoid going to the pool, especially when it's busy, because I'm a bit insecure about being seen in a bathing suit. But the pool was fairly quiet this weekend. At one point, I was swimming alone (yeah, I know, I'm not supposed to, but I prefer it that way), just doing laps, when a neighbor came into the pool, said hi, and swam a few laps and got out. Then he asked me if I was training to be a swimmer because of all the laps I was swimming, and I was thinking that I must be pretty camouflaged under the water, because even when I was skinny I never had a swimmers body. I considered that he might be flirting, or maybe just being nice. So I finished up my laps and sat in the sun and read my book for a while. Then he chatted me up again about how many laps I swam and said he couldn't do more than a few without getting winded. So I'm thinking he's still just being nice. Then later, he playfully splashes me. Okay, that's definitely flirting. While I'm sunbathing in my swimsuit.

Thank you Mr. (possibly kind of creepy) Neighbor Dude. You just gave me the confidence I needed to keep up this swimming thing and not be so embarrassed to be seen in my swimming suit.

Monday, Monday.

We were very fortunate . . . yesterday Mrs Web said "it feels hot in here, is the air conditioner working right?". I looked at the temp and it was 81 in here. I could hear the outside unit running, but the blower in the furnace was not. Our furnace is in the attic so I went up there and messed around with what I could to try to figure out what the deal was. The blower would spin freely, but didn't act like it would even try to run. It was incredibly hot up there so I didn't spend any more time than I had to.

I went up the street to a church friend's house who works for the gas company (they also do heating/air repairs). My intention was to ask him for advice on things to check. He was like "Come on, let's go look at it". I said "No, its in the attic and its too hot up there, you don't need to come suffer like that on a Sunday." He insisted we go.

We spent about 20 minutes up there and he determined that the control board had gone bad. We went down to the gas company and they had a universal board on hand what would work ($200). I told him we could survive the night and we could put the board in first thing the next day when it would be cooler. Again, he insisted we get it done. So we did. It was another 45 minutes up there with sweat literally running off of us. Normally it wouldn't take that long but since it was a compatible board rather than the same thing, we had to read the instructions for all the wiring routing rather than plug/unplug from the old to the new.

Anyway, we got it up and running again. We were both soaked with sweat. He wouldn't let me pay him. I went and got him $80 in gift certificates to two restaurants so he'd have to accept it.

The fortunate thing is that it didn't happen while we were on vacation. I had turned the thermostat to 80, but left the AC on while we were gone so it wouldn't get too hot. The way it was going with the outside unit running, but the inside part not, I wonder if it would have done damage to the outside unit too.

Anyway, we're running again thanks to a friend and $280.

Wow Web, you did get lucky.

I'm sorry Fuzzy. If we could get you out of there, we would.

Sounds like it was an eventful weekend for most of you. I was up north. Not much happened. I managed to only sunburn the right side of me during the trip back in the car with all the traffic and no ac. So naturally my arm went out the window. But my leg got burned too. So since I'm driving today, I'm throwing my left arm out the window every chance I get trying to balance the color out

The Girl and the new boyfriend came over last night for dinner. Her birthday is in a few days. This one is only 17 but is cuter and seems more polite. But when they are together it is ridiculous. They ignored us for half of the night with there bickering and rough-housing. It was a long night.

I agree with Woo. Sounds like most of you had pretty eventful weekends. Mine was short and boring.

DS, sorry about the car. I too hate being without one, I feel like a bird without wings, trapped within a few block radius of my house. I hate cars in general though too, my goal is to eventually work within walking distance from the house and only need a car for vacations and such. Right now I'm walking distance to the majority of my family, my dentist, my grocery store, my bank and the farmers market. If I can land a job within a few blocks of here I'm set!

Anyone interested in possibly changing jobs with me? OH called and wants to come for an audit. I can't win.

JR - I wouldn't suggest trying to do your regular grocery shopping and then walk home. I also suggest you don't steal the shopiing cart to push your groceries home. And don't tell me that you are just borrowing it because you will take it back the following week to use it.

I know someone here at work that when his car broke down during the week he pushed the cart home for 3 miles and then pushed it back.

Fuzz, I am literally at the end of the grocery store parking lot. I tend to shop five times a week rather than one big trip a week. The only time I take the car is if I'm buying soda because I usually get five cases at a time.

The working near home probably sounds like a pipe-dream too, but actually I'm within 4 blocks of a major industrial center with about 10 national companies and another 10 fairly big local companies. I check their websites every Monday for job openings. Which reminds me...

Wow!  That's probably about as far as a cart ever got from the store!  My first job was as a utility clerk at a grocery store.  I used to love being told a cart was seen three or four blocks away.  It was an excuse to go on a nice long walk.

My co-worker Joe (who sadly I heard died recently of a heart attack) used to be gone for an hour when he went on a cart run.  One day I went out to find him because he was gone so long and I found him sitting on a huge snowpile by the Burger King eating a bag of fries.

When it comes to seeing how you would do if you didn't have a car, I just found out about http://www.walkscore.com/.  I only score a 48, because the grocery store is so far away.

Incredible. There's a website for pretty much ANYTHING these days huh?

My results...

Compare Your Score

West Allis top 10%: 76

Your score: 80

West Allis average: 63

You are in the top 1% of West Allis residents.

I would say that's a confirmation that a walking lifestyle is doable for me if I can just land a job nearby.

Speaking of the grocery store, I best get some socks and shoes on and head over for some veggies & yogurt, I'm out of veggies and down to only three yogurts left. I've been trying to have one every day because I've read that they're great for helping digestion and fighting off germs. Those active cultures are like little military troops, fighting the bad guys in your system!

Do they have any openings for an accountant. And do you have an extra room?

I'm sure they do. We have a HUGE Blue Cross/Blue Shield building. They've probably got some accountants in there.

Well, this is shaping up to be an interesting day. My boss called and said that police have the road blocked off, so she can't get back to the office. So I went outside and looked. There have been shots fired, and police were walking around with shotguns. So I came back in and looked at Twitter:

More shots, and an ambulance just went by. We're really just two doors down from the intersection where this is all going down at, but I can't get a real good view from my office window.

And where was your protection in case you needed it?

I enjoy that everything said stay away, but you know people saw something going on and went over there.

Actually, there weren't a lot of gawkers, which surprised me.  It's mostly a residential area though, so I assume most people were at work.

See that red bush?  What's hard to see is the tall fence that runs right next to it.  Parked right next to that fence and those bushes: my car.  I'm really surprised you can't see it in this pic.
