Tuesday

So, here's the story about what was happening here yesterday afternoon:

BLOOMINGTON - A police sniper shot and killed a man during a hostage situation in Monroe County Monday.

Police say 50-year-old Richard North of Bloomington was reported around 1:25 p.m. Monday, holding a gun to the head of a woman in the 1300 block of South Rogers Street. They were walking toward South Rockport Road and North reportedly had one arm around the woman's neck.

Initial reports said that North fired multiple shots, including at least one toward responding officers. Additional officers responded to the scene to block traffic from the area.

North then tried to enter John's Food Mart at the corner of Rogers and Rockport, but the employees had already locked the doors. He stayed in the area, holding onto the woman and waving the gun at police as a hostage negotiator talked to him.

Officers with the Critical Incident Response Team set up a perimeter around the incident.

"As he continued to endanger the female by holding her with the weapon and pointing the weapon toward officers, a police sniper fired one shot at the male who dropped immediately," Bloomington Police Capt. Joe Qualters wrote in a release.

North was taken to IU Health-Bloomington, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries. The female hostage was taken to police headquarters, where she was interviewed by investigators and released.

The incident remains under investigation. An internal investigation will also be conducted, due to an officer being involved in the shooting, Qualters wrote.

Yikes!  I just caught up on what was going on yesterday after I couldn't come back to play -- I imagine it was quite frightening, Mz.  I wonder if he knew the woman or if she was just a random hostage (?)

I have my car back -- YAY!  I will have to rob Peter to pay Paul -- Oh well hmm

Today it's going to be 112*

I'm really hoping he knew her. Because otherwise, I'll start thinking, what if I had walked to the gas station (also known as John's Food Mart) for a drink for lunch? Sometimes I'll bring my lunch but forget a drink, or drink it and need another, and just walk over there to get a tea or something. And that doesn't take into account how much I've been walking to work...

Only Tuesday? Today started. Then the boss he decides he is going to volunteer me for additional work that belongs to another department. I don't think so. And I told him that. The other department owns this work to begin with. They are the ones that set up accounts and have the contracts. In addition, they just made three promotions, hired a replacement individual and will be hiring another individual to add headcount to that department. There is one of me. I'm not doing it.

I have to agree -- hope he knew her. We usually think about the nut jobs lurking at night in the shadows, but anymore, they're everywhere at all hours of the day. I carry pepper spray, but don't really know if I could actually manage to get to it in time to use it.

That is just so not right, Fuzzy. Stick to your guns!

I hate working with "prima donnas".

I carry something a little more powerful. You never know when or where something could happen.

He sent the email that said do the work to three of us, two in that department. I responded to only him telling him I wasn't doing it and why. He then forwards that email to all three of us and tells the other girl (who, by the way was one of the ones promoted) that I said they have the informations to make the determination. Hello!?! that is not what I said. Read the email. Good thing the boss went home or I might kick his ass today.

I wouldn't mind carrying a tazer. I've been meaning to look into getting one for a while, but just haven't.

Before yesterday, my stepdad already said he wants to get me a gun. If he hears about this thing, I can probably count on getting one for Christmas. But I'm not so adverse to carrying a gun as having it unattended in the house. Brian has had night terrors, and although I doubt anything would happen, I just don't want to go there.

I have a very unique working relationship. My boss is not (nor has ever been) in this office. He was here last week for a visit. It is a lot more effort on my part not having a boss sitting next to me. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my freedom, but it is tough with many other things.

Don't worry, I believe it is against state laws to give guns as a gift. They have to be registered to an individual that has passed a background check. Or if he did buy it, it then has to be transferred to you and you have to go through the same thing.

Oh, it won't be an open a package type surprise, he would say, "This is your Christmas present, and I'm going to pay for it, so this is what you need to do..."  But he doesn't take no for an answer, and if I didn't follow through, he would just keep on at me until I did.  So really, I'm gearing up for an argument.

Maybe he'll buy me one then? If he is going to spend the money anyway, there is one or two I have my eye on. Both are smaller than the one I have which makes for easier carrying (especially in the summer when there are fewer layers of clothes to conceal things. A heavy gun and shorts don't make a good combo.

I think the argument of the things Brian goes through is good enough. And your stepdad should respect that.

I had a 9mm Ruger for several years. Very rarely I'd take it out to the farm and shoot a few rounds through it. When the boy arrived, I knew I had to either make sure it was locked up properly, or get rid of it. The more I thought about it, I just sold it to a friend and used that money to buy a ham radio kit.

I still have a shotgun and a .22 rifle, but those are not as tempting as a pistol.

Recently we locked up our guns even the paint guns, at a remote site when Jacob was having his paranoid delusions and was asking for his .22 rifle.
Isaac was recently rewarded with a new pellet rifle, but I'm even aprehensive about it. Although Jacob hasn't had any extreme episodes, he's still not taking his meds or seeing a doctor and I really just don't want to chance having them in the house.

We've got paint guns, but I'm okay with that. I figure they would take enough of a plan that anything else could be a weapon too, and getting to them would take long enough to diffuse the situation. But, I deal with more short term episodes, it sounds like what you have to deal with lasts longer.

Crazy stuff MZ.

I know what you mean about hoping they knew the person though. That's always my first thought when I hear about a crime (which in Milwaukee is about every twelve hours). Random violence is much more worrisome than squabbles between friends or lovers or whatever.

I would bet that out of the 150 or so murders in Milwaukee every year that only 3 or 4 of them are from random violence. Usually they're drug deals gone bad, or one bad guy killing another bad guy, or a crime of passion, etc. Somehow that always makes me feel better.

DS, make sure you dont haul around the same cannister of pepper spray for 10 years, it tends to be less effective over time.  The contents are still as strong, but the proppellant tends to dissipate.
