Intensive Care

'Intensive Care'

Robbie Williams brought his new album out today, I went and got it first thing, just finished listening to it, I would say it is his best album to date, very good solid pop songs, just thought I would let you know as he is not going to be relasing it in the US, so if you want to get hold of it, it will have to be on import, but it is worth it.

Robbie - Intensive Care

Hey Ultimo...

Sorry for the delayed response...I haven't really been on the board so much.

Yes, I am definitely a Robbie fan.  I got very much into him a little over a year ago.  A friend of mine was talking about how much she loved his music, so I decided to check out his CDs.  I started with The Ego Has Landed (US compilation from his 1st 2 UK albums).  I loved it.  I had previously known "Millenium" because it was his only real US hit, which I think is the most UNREPRESENTATIVE example of his style.  I also checked out some streaming videos on his website.  From there "Strong" became one of my favorite songs.

Anyway, I went on to buy "Sing When You're Winning" and "Escapology."  Due to recommendations I read online I avoided "Swing When You're Winning!"  Although I know these are older, these were my favorite/most played CDs of 2004.  What can I say, I'm not your typical yank!

I'm finding I like UK music a lot.  I'm not too keen on the pop/hip hop direction American music's taken in the last few (several) years.  I recently heard the UK band "Feeder" and got their new CD.  I think that's great stuff too.  It's only available on import here also.  Do you like them at all?

I like Robbie a lot, a shame that the American public didn't feel the same way

Hey, thanks Ultimo...

No, I haven't heard the Kaiser Chiefs stuff.  I'm not sure how I missed it.  I guess I was actually away from my desk or doing some work at that point?    I will definitely check it out.  I'm looking for new (to me) music of quality.

I am really impressed with Feeder...great band.  "Feeling A Moment" is awesome!  It was featured prominently on a TV show over here in the US (One Tree Hill) on their season premiere this year and I loved it.  I tracked it down and bought an import CD of "Pushing the Senses." I'm really enjoying the album.  I'm sorry to say I don't know of anything in the US that I think is as good right now.

I have become a big Robbie Fan.  His stuff is very insightful and some of it is very positive & inspiring.  Of course, some is very cynical, but it's all pretty honest.  His lyrics are great.  "Love Be Your Energy" and "Feel" are a couple of my favorites.  I feel like I live in a vacuum as Robbie Williams fan in the US.  I doubt he'll ever tour here.  I'm glad FFR has some of his songs!

Yeah It is shame that Robbie has kind of given up on the States for now, I think he may give it another go in the future but for now I think he is just happy with the rest of the world, its weird how hard it can be for artists to break America, Robbie is like the biggest pop star in the UK and many parts of europe but he is hardly known in the US, its just weird but I guess there are massive stars over in the States that I never get to hear too.

Yeah, that does seem to be how it works.  I have heard that he is huge over there and I can see why.  He's really talented.  That stuff's hard to sing...I've tried it on Karaoke!

I requested some Kaiser Chiefs and another new RW song...they should be coming up soon.  I realized I have heard the "I Love You Less and Less" song once.  I'll have to hear it again to have a clear impression of it.  I picked another one (don't remember the name at this moment) to experience a sampling of their music.

I think Robbie is going to be the new Kylie.   In the 12-13 years between Kylie first made the US charts with her debut (Locomotion, It's No Secret, etc...) and she returned to the states in 2002 with Can't Get You Out Of My Head, she was basically non-existant in America except for a number devoted fans, yet at the same time she had more UK top 10 hits in that period than any female artist except for Madonna.

Maybe the same thing is going to happen with Robbie, he had his brief moment in the sun here in 99 with Millennium and Angels and subsequent releases failed to make much of an impact here (even thought Rock DJ did get some airplay),  I guess Robster will concentrate overseas for the next 6 to 8 years and suddenly will come back with a song that is so worldwidely irresistable that Americans can't help but take notice.

I do think his "Greatest Hits" cd SHOULD get a US release though.  Granted, he is maybe 1/100th as popular here as in Europe but a lot of one-hit-wonders who are less recognized than him have hits collections out.

However, Ultimo may be the first British person I met who actually loves Robbie.  I have several British friends who always tell me when I say that Robbie deserves to be bigger here with the "oh, you should be glad he's not that popular there", most of them hate him with a passion, it seems like his small American fanbase actually appreciates him better because it's not the same thing here where his albums are guarenteed to sell are there.

anf...

You make some really interesting points.

I can see what you're saying about the UK fans not appreciating him.  I can think of a few acts here in the states that I got sick of when everything they did was popular.  Madonna even got like that for me for a while.  Even though I'm getting off the topic, I do have to say I really like her new CD.  Anyway...

I hope you're right about Robbie gaining popularity here eventually because I think he's a great performer and a real talent...and I would love to get to see him live.  Only if he gets some more success here is that ever going to happen.
