I cannot stand Stern, cannot imagine that Roth would win me over either! I'll take Riggs anyday!
Brace yourselves, Stern fans--there's a new shock jock in town.
On Tuesday, former Van Halen front man David Lee Roth appeared as the much-touted mystery guest on Howard Stern's radio show to reveal that he will be taking over the morning slot on Jan. 3 after Stern's shift to Sirius Satellite radio.
You've built quite an empire here, and I'd like to think that they've saved it for the best guy," Roth told Stern. "It will be a very interesting adventure."
Roth will take over in markets including New York, Boston, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Dallas and West Palm Beach, Florida.
The ex-rocker said that he was approached about the job in February and that working in radio had been a lifelong dream of his.
"I'll be performing for more people in one morning than the Rolling Stones will in an entire summer," he said.
"I'm happy for you, and I do wish you the best," Stern told his replacement.
The legendary radio host said he needed to move on to the unfettered format of satellite radio because he wanted "freedom to speak about what I want, and I have to be free to do my
type of comedy."
His "type of comedy" has earned Stern strict fines and suspensions from the airwaves in recent years, spurring the shock jock's desire to operate without censorship restrictions.
"Putting together this morning radio network was the greatest pride of my life," Stern said. "When they said I couldn't do it, I said 'You're all insane.' How do you not challenge the future? How do you not challenge this industry? I can't imagine why you would want to do it."
After all those years of challenging the industry, Infinity Broadcasting apparently felt that Stern's shoes were simply too big for just one host to fill.
As a result, Adam Carolla will be picking up Stern's radio hosting duties in several West Coast markets, including Los Angeles, Seattle and Phoenix, with former Man Show cohort Jimmy Kimmel serving as a creative consultant.
"When we set out to find a replacement for Howard Stern, we took the opportunity to cultivate a wide array of talent, from both in and out of the radio industry," Infinity CEO Joel Hollander said in a statement. "With Roth, we?ve found someone who continues to evolve his career and deliver for his legion of fans. Adam?s depth of entertainment experience is unmatched in radio. And Jimmy has a proven track record of creating winning shows for both radio and television. Couple that with an impressive roster of emerging talent and formats and we have all the necessary elements for Infinity to continue as the major player in morning drive."
During a conference call announcing Infinity's Stern replacement strategy Tuesday, a voice familiar to fans of the shock jock was heard--Beetlejuice, an well-known member of Stern's whack pack.
The snaggle-toothed radio show fixture was rapidly cut off, as Hollander continued the call.
"I'm glad Howard thinks this call is important enough to put on Beetlejuice," Hollander said, before continuing with a jab at the shock jock's brand of humor. "Infinity will have no 24-hour channels of farting."
Stern had previously endorsed Roth and Carolla as his choices for his replacements back in June.
Elsewhere, DJ Rover, who helms the morning show for Cleveland's 92.3 Xtreme Radio, will take over for Stern in Chicago, Detroit, Cincinnati, and Memphis.
Several other Stern stations will replace the host with the DJ-free Jack-FM format, while at least one will begin broadcasting CNN's morning news.
Following both Roth and Carolla's morning drive shows, Penn Jillette (i.e., the taller, louder half of Penn & Teller) will broadcast a one-hour comedy program in markets including New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Detroit, San Diego, Baltimore and Las Vegas.
Stern was paid a reported $500 million to make the jump to satellite and has had a timer on his Website counting down the days until the end of his contract for months now.
"I've done what I needed to do here," Stern said Tuesday.
I think Roth will probably be a good, tamer replacement for Stern. Keep in mind that they are trying to keep the Stern fans here. But I don't know about Adam Corrola. I like him, but his style of humor is different from Stern's. He's still risque, but much calmer and subtler. I don't know if they'll keep the audience.
