Shut the Heck Award goes to...

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- The Rev. Jesse Jackson called the Philadelphia Eagles' punishment of Terrell Owens "much too severe."

Jackson said in a statement released Friday that Owens could have been more professional when he publicly complained about his contract, his team and the Eagles' organization.

But Jackson said Owens' suspension without pay for four games and deactivation for the rest of the season is "much too severe for the charge" and hurts the athlete's NFL career at its height.

The civil rights activist said the level of punishment could have been warranted if Owens had been caught shaving points, selling drugs, carrying a gun or fighting fans without sufficient restraint.

"This does not warrant a one-year ban from the game," Jackson said, adding that the Eagles should release Owens to the open market or free agency if they no longer want to associate with him.

Ralph Nader, a consumer activist and former presidential candidate, has already called for the suspension to be rescinded.

Owens was suspended last week after he said in an interview that the Eagles showed "a lack of class" for not publicly recognizing his 100th career touchdown catch, and that the team would be better off with Green Bay's Brett Favre as quarterback. He has since apologized.

Complete statement

"Terrell Owens did an interview last week and engaged in some unsportsmanlike speech, deemed detrimental to the team, but nonetheless free speech. He expressed some dissatisfaction with his contract, his team and the Eagles' organization, which should have been expressed in a more professional manner. The Eagles have suspended T.O. for four games without pay and have decided to deactivate him for the rest of the year. His future in the National Football League is uncertain, thus potentially ending his career at its heights.

"This punishment is much too severe for the charge. If he had been caught shaving points, selling drugs, carrying a gun or fighting some fans, who provoked him, and he had not shown sufficient restraint, we could understand the severe suspension, because those are very serious and illegal acts. Unfortunately for T.O., who belatedly apologized three days after the infraction, the real question is do his comments warrant a penalty this severe?

"The answer is no. This does not warrant a one-year ban from the game. The NFL Players Association has taken a position that the punishment does not correspond with the infraction and the association wants the Eagles to cut T.O. if they are not going to reinstate him. I agree. T.O. has publicly apologized. His heart is contrite. If the Philadelphia Eagles' owners do not find his apology acceptable and no longer aim to maintain an association with him, they should release him to the open market or free agency, allowing him to test the free market for his services. I call for fairness in this dispute."

I am just amazed at how many people want to cut this loser MORE slack.

Why not use this as an opportunity to teach the younger fans a novel idea. That being that there are actually CONSEQUENCES FOR YOUR FREAKING ACTIONS!

This is so typical of this country nowadays. Instead of personal responsibility and accepting your punishment, everyone wants to make a martyr out of the guilty party.

Frankly it makes me sick. It's why no one is afraid to do whatever they want anymore.

I was in the library last night and this father was in there with his young boy, probably 5 - 7 years old (I'm not good with ages). The kid was talking and yelling as loud as he could and not ONCE did the dad say "Hey, this is a library, keep it down".

Worse yet, five librarians sat there an rolled their eyes but never said anything.

If I'd acted like that as a child I would have been told to be quiet. If that didn't work I would have gotten a good spanking and made to wait in the car.

This kid will grow up to think he can do whatever he wants, whenever he wants, and when he's an unmanageable teenager the parents will paint themselves as victims instead of acknowledging they SCREWED UP in the raising of the kid.

And you can't blame the kid. Kids like attention, kids like the sound of their own voice. But where the hell are the parents!

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Now wait a sec, that's an article that quotes both Ralph Nader and Jesse Jackson? Are you sure you didn't find this on The Onion or something?

Who are these two to be saying anything about this situation? I realize that both of them like to hear themselves talk, but please. What a bunch of morons. Since when do politics and sports stick up for each other. The problem is, almost everyone agress with the Eagles actions including fans and sportscasters.

Frankly, who cares what Nader and Jackson think. I agree with Dave when he said Jackson said it was too much but he didn't say what he thought was appropriate.

What a stupid mess. No one is going to want TO, not even a struggling team. And he is certainly not going to receive a contract for the money he wants or is making now.

Whatever.

I truly hope that this event will set a new standard for dealing with athletes who act like petulant children and overgrown frat boys.  If Mr. Owens is so unhappy with the organization he signed with, he should be thrilled that he does not have to go work for them.  Release him to free agency?  Why?  He signed a contract, didn't he?  I'm certain part of that contract included representing the Eagles organization in a professional and dignifed manor.  He didn't keep his end of the deal.

I agree totally Mema. That is what is wrong with kids today. No one wants to take responsibility for their words or actions. Let him set an example to these kids- take the punishment and suffer!

There is just too much of this spoiled brat behavior that has been accepted from celebrities and athletes over the years.  It is sickening to turn on the news and hear this stuff.  I'm not one of those 'better than thou' types, nor am I a prude, but really... enough is enough.  A lot of these people have families... is that how they really want their children to see them?

I was overwhelmed at how much coverage the NBA's recent dress code regulations got.  Is it really so much to ask to have these millionaires wear decent looking clothing when they are representing their employer? News flash... that's what a lot of us who get paid a lot less have to deal with as well, myself included.

Now, make millions of dollars for playing ball and then ask for a stipend for your clothes allowance. The nerve.
