That's exactly how it was with me and my ex. Although we lived in different towns, just knowing he was there for me whenever I needed it helped a lot. I wasn't ready to let him go until I met my husband, and then it still went on for months. Also, I predicted that when we split up, we wouldn't be friends any more (more of his way of handling relationships than mine), and I was right. I still miss him as a friend.
