Wednesday, Schmensday

We've reached the hump of yet another week.

I have to help some friends with their boys after school. They had to run to Omaha today so I will have their two boys from after school until they all go to church events at 6:30. They should be home before church is over. The boys will have fun together. It looks like I'll be cooking McDonalds this evening.

I did feel pretty good about finding a problem. One of my church site customers had a problem to where visitors couldn't right-click and save sermon audio files in IE. It works in every other browser. This guy is acutally pretty good with web stuff and he spent a lot of time on it to no avail. He was convinced it was a server issue.

I tracked the problem to his 'htaccess" file which is a file you can use to control how the webserver accesses your pages. He had it set that the referring site must be presented to allow files to load. This is somewhat normal as it keeps outside sources from directly linking to your site's content.

By watching logs, I found that when you do the right-click "save target as" thing in Internet Explorer, it does not provide the referring link info. Thus, those requests were getting blocked by his "htaccess" settings.

I was pretty proud of myself for finding a bug in the new IE . . . then I did a search and found that this has been a known bug for YEARS. It is even listed in Microsoft's own list of things to fix, but they haven't done it yet.

Oh well, I now have a customer thinks I'm pretty smart . . . I guess it's true that you really can fool some people.

High five to you, Web smile  I am clueless to what you did, but helping people feels good.

Not much happening in my neck of the woods today.  I'm feeling ansty; like I need a change of scenery.  Isaac is having a friend spend the night on Saturday and I'm thinking about taking a little road trip to Woolaroc in Bartlesville, if his friend's parents don't mind and the weather is nice.

Good day all.

I'm impressed Web.

I get that feeling a lot in winter, DS. I get it in summer sometimes too, but I can usually go do a lot of new things in summer that just aren't available in winter.

I just submitted the publication files for Brains for the Zombie Soul for review. I'm pretty proud of this one. I am a little nervous about getting it in time though. I have 5 weeks, which should be plenty of time, but I'm still cutting it closer than I'd have liked. Now I have to wait up to 48 hours for my files to be approved, then 5 days for my proof, then I have to figure out how many to order and wait for them to come in, and I don't know how long that will take. I think it will take a couple weeks, but I won't know until I've got the proof reviewed and decide on a quantity.

Good day, all. It is currently 41* and rainy here today. From the forecast it appears that it will be rainy all day, but kinda sunny for the rest of the week. Not complaining about the rain. I'll take that over snow any day.

Not a lot of excitement here today. I've been to one staff meeting already. Got another one to go to at 1. Mostly today at the office seems to be a space filler to get to my real work which will be starting at 11PM tonight, cleaning up a little data corruption issue in one of our switches. Hoping that goes quickly and smoothly so we can fix the other switches tomorrow night and be done with this inconvenient issue. Not to mention, it gets a little old working day/night/day/night/day. I'll definitely be ready for the weekend.

Great job by you, Web! It is really cool figuring out some obscure issue.

DS... good luck with the antsy-ness. A weekend getaway is always fun.

I'm already feeling as thought I need to nap. Seriously. Wall of tired just smacked me down.

Ah well... hope everybody has a great day.

Afternoon all. I'm just doing my thing. Of course none if it was the things I had planned for today. The last two days have been like that. I need to block everything and everyone else out and get some of this work (due 3/1) finished.

And I'm a little confused about something. Back in early November, at least I think it was November, it could have been longer, I completed an online application for a company with a job similar to most of what I do now plus some stuff in my past work life. I heard nothing. Naturally I thought I wasn't good enough for them. You can go back online and see the "status" of your submission. I think it gave you things like we got it but no thanks, interview offered, offer made, etc. After a few weeks I remember checking and not having a status. So I placed a phone call, left a voicemail and received no return call. Today I go into my one email account (the one that is a little more "professional"). I don't go into it every day. That is where all my tax type subscriptions go and I use it for resume type stuff. I went in today to clean out the junk mail. In there is an email sent Monday morning around 11am from this company who seemed to have ignored me telling me that I had an interview scheduled for Tuesday at 9am. Did I mention that I read that at 10am this morning? It tells me who I am scheduled to have an interview with. It doesn't tell me if it is by phone or in person. I really had no advanced warning. Any prep I would have done to be ready for something was months ago. I don't remember any of it. How can they think that is proper to do? You didn't call me to tell me or even ask if I am available. They also tell me to go back and complete an online application. It will also be used to complete a background check once "your successful interview is complete".

Part of me thinks it was some kind of mistake. Maybe their system was hacked or a hiccup occured and a bunch of these emails went out to potential interviwees. I was going to call but have pushed it off so far. If it was not a mistake, seriously, how can they think that is the right thing to do? A simple five minute (if that) phone call is all that would have been needed.

Yeah Fuzzy, that's weird. It's worth calling though. Shows that you're still interested, and that you may have some good job skills. Even if the job's not available now, it could be later.

Wow, Fuzzy. If that is their "normal" procedure, that is a really bad way of going about it.

Hmm... yeah, I'd probably call them back. Think I might also be concerned if they offered me a job. If this is how they handle their prospective employees, how are they really going to treat their actual employees?

I logged in to see what I could see. The "Action" status choices are: New, Considered, Unconsidered, Interview in Progress, Offer Extended, Offer Accepted, Hired.

Mine still shows nothing. :/

Well, if they sent you a lame attempt to get you to come for an interview, at least you wouldn't rate as "unconsidered". That just sounds so rude.

I agree with you about being concerned if they offered me a job. I guess that is why I'm not in a hurry to call them. In addition, I can't help but wonder if they hired someone who didn't work out and are starting over. Which means I wasn't good enough the first time or I was too late in applying. I know what I do and I imagine that they would have to replace someone who left the position relatively quickly. Time sensitive deadlines are everywhere. I know it is slightly different here because I am the only one who does what I do. Perhaps they have other people in position to cover the missing link. It makes me want to ask 20 questions that I don't think I have the right to ask.

Then ask them.  What are they going to do, not hire you?  There's tons of reasons why they could be looking to hire someone now, not all of them bad.  There's also the possibility that the person that was leaving before didn't end up leaving, or pushed back the date, which is why there was such a huge delay.  It's worth the call to find out.
