My hubby and I do not see eye to eye on this at all. He says if it was Zach that had sex with a teacher, he would be the man! If it was Amy and her teacher- it would be forced!
I think her sentence is harsh- 3 years house arrest, 7 probation and a registered sex offender, but her avoidance of jail time is a load of poop!
In a last-minute effort to keep herself out of prison, a 25-year-old Florida middle school teacher pleaded guilty Tuesday to having sex with a 14-year-old. Debra Lafave pleaded guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior, and was sentenced to three years of house arrest followed by seven years probation. She also must register as a sex offender.
Her sentence isn't to harsh it's too lenient. She pleaded guilty to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery, she could have faced up to 15 years in prison on each count. There's a definite double-standard. If it was a male with a 14 year-old female he would not get a three year house arrest sentence. There would be a huge outcry for jail time.
If a guy teach did this to a young girl we'd think he was sick.
But as a guy I can tell you that when I was 14, if I had a teacher that looked like her, I WOULD HAVE BEEN DAYDREAMING THROUGH THE ENTIRE CLASS about her and I hooking up!
It's probably not right, but the way our society operates, it just seems less offensive in this situation.
CNN) -- A judge in Marion County, Florida, on Thursday rejected a proposed plea deal for Debra Lafave, who pleaded guilty in another county to having sex with a 14-year-old student while she was a teacher.
"The agreement went below the guidelines, and I'm not willing to go below the guidelines," Judge Hale Stancil told CNN, without elaborating.
The trial in Marion County for the 25-year-old former reading teacher is set for April 10.
Defense attorneys had sought to spare their client a prison sentence, which they were able to do with the plea agreement in Hillsborough County. Lafave pleaded guilty there on November 22 to two counts of lewd and lascivious behavior.
I'm firmly on the side of "she should be doing time". I understand the whole double standard theory. The thing it doesn't take into consideration is that a 14 yr old boy is still a BOY, not a MAN. Most 14 yr olds are not mentally and emotionally mature enough to handle the responsibilities of an adult relationship. Clearly, neither is Ms. LaFave.
The thing I can't believe there hasn't been more outrage over is comments made by Ms. LaFave's attorney. Specifically that she shouldn't be sentenced to prison because she is too pretty. Since when is that a factor? Do you ever hear about a man being too attractive for a prison sentence? No... all you hear is speculation about how long it will take for him to be someone's 'little bunny'.
